Yeah yeah ok. CoD is everyone's game of choice. It's just so popular they makes calendars clocks birthday cards mugs t shirts Easter eggs houses helicopters and moons with CoD on. CoD is also exclusive to one system and sells regularly above 10 million, and has sold over 20, even 25 million copies. One iteration of CoD still sells 5/6 years after release and is consistently in the top
30. If you asked the general public who is the fave of gaming they'd say an army dude off a CoD game.

I'm not downplaying it's success but please? Mario is the face of gaming the face of the industry and has a gotten into the psyche of the general public. He's as big as Mickey Mouse, as famous as Michael Jackson, almost everyone could probably hum one of the classic Mario tunes. He's bigger, he's better, and he'll outlive this phase of CoD just like he's left every other fad behind.

Couldn't have said it any better myself. I was just too scared to post it... 'tis scary around these parts... ya know with all the CoD fans here.

Thanks! I'm just sticking up for us Nintendo fans. I mean don't get me wrong when things go well for other systems I'm all for it and of course think its worth celebrating/mentioning. But anyone disputing who is THE face of gaming just for a success to seem more triumphant than it is makes it annoying. Everyone on here who isn't a Nintendo fan likes to bash Nintenso, downplay its successes or make outlandish claims. History is not a few good years of sales of a multi platform franchise.

Since when are we talking about "THE face of gaming"?

We're talking about which franchise is currently the most popular and that's Call of Duty. And we're using revenues to come to a conclusion because that's probably the most objective way of comparing something's success. Mario is big but not Call of Duty big. Call of Duty's popularity may or may not fade with time (depending on how the franchise is handled in the future) but it undeniably influenced a whole generation that will in many case remember it more than Mario. Let the future tell the truth.

And considering that the CoD series is on Nintendo consoles too I don't see why praising its success is going against Nintendo...

I don't even know why Nintendo was brought in a PS3 sales discussion anyway.

not even close

hell even on youtube mario has more videos and views than any cod video on youtube. Ask anyone what mario is and they will know.

Mario is something everyone grew up with. Mario kart alone sold 33 million, which is far more than any call of duty game ever.

Mario will never die out. Call of duty will get stale really soon and we even see battlefield gaining more attention and with gta v there is no place but down for call of duty.

Dude, I don't care which of Mario or Call of Duty has the biggest brand recognition. It has nothing to do with anything. We're talking about current relevance, not past glories. And besides that comparison is futile considering that Mario is just "Mario" whereas Call of Duty holds many names: "Call of Duty", "CoD", "MW2", "MW3", "Modern Warfare", "Black Ops", "BO2", "World at War", etc.

Mario Kart Wii did amazing indeed but it's not like the franchise gets a yearly release to stop it from having legs. You're wrong though about Call of Duty not selling more than 33 million. Modern Warfare 3 is only 1.5 years old and already sold at least 32 million (probably more), without being bundled. That has to mean something to you.

Mario has been around for 20 more years than Call of Duty. Obvioulsy more people will know about it.

And as I said, let the future tell the truth.

MW3 has not sold nearly what you are saying it did. It's closer to about 28 million in sales with all versions combined. Also YOU turned this into current relavence. This whole time we have been talking about the most popular franchise in gaming history. The Mario franchise in a year out sells call of duty in a year as well.

Mario has had bad times with the gamecube yet it came back its strongest with the wii so time won't do shit. When the time comes this november I shall quote you and put you to shame.

What? Where do get your numbers?

http://www.vgchartz.com/gamedb/?name=modern+warfare+3

VGC has it at 30 million. It easily sold another 2 million copies on steam + LIVE + PSN.

And it's Majora who said Mario and Pokémon were currently more relevant than CoD. That's when I stepped in.

This is so sad that people love these games that much.

I definitely agree. I couldn't care less about FPS's, TPS's, or Sports games.

Ooooookay. You do that.

We'll compare the most recent Call of Duty to the most recent Mario game (www.vgchartz.com/game/70766/new-super-mario-bros-u/).

I bet the next Call of Duty will sell twice NSMBU's lifetime in 24 hours in the US alone.

Quote me.

Hey guys, do you think Halo Reach (9.41m) or Halo 4 (8.07m) will reach 10m mark?

Also, about how Mario games strong on the Wii. I dont really think it is game itself what push the sales. Just casual gamers who bought Wii - buying games with Mario in the title.
You can see current sales of New Super Mario Bros U. Where all 30m fans gone?

I thought this was a GT praise thread... COD go figure...

Doubtful if Mario Kart reaches 30m again.  However it is pretty much guaranteed that Call of Duty will reach 20m+ once again this year.  Tell you what.  When Mario can hit 20m+ 4 years in a row with one game then Ill say Mario is bigger but at the moment CoD has been bigger.  Every year they do 20m+

I totally agree with that.
Look at other semi hardcore Nintendo titles without Mario in the title.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - 6.77
Donkey Kong Country Returns - 5.93
Animal Crossing: City Folk - 4.44
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword - 3.64
Kirby's Epic Yarn - 2.02
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption - 1.64
Kirby's Return to Dreamland - 1.54

Not that great sales numbers anymore. It is because huge casual audience of Wii dont know anything about them.
And unless Wii U be able to capture casuals again - we will never see 30m sales numbers on Mario games.
