^ Well HK didn't do it - that was all Silicon Knights. Hideo wanted them to realize their vision, so the deviations were all on them. MGS PS1 > MGS TS as a result, despite the technological limitations of the PS1 relative to the GC.

I've heard differently:

The game was handled by Silicon Knights while the cutscenes were handled in Japan. I recall reading that the original cutscenes were faithful to the original game and Kojima rejected them because he wanted them to be more action packed.

Would like to maybe double check on that and know which was the actual story.

What I read was not unlike Ninja Theory and Capcom with respect to DmC. The initial content was not seen as ideal because it was too similar to the source material, and instead HK wanted them to make the game in their own vision as opposed to mimicking what he did with the first game. But you can always double check and share your findings.

Still, I would have preferred something closer to the original cutscenes rather than the (what I consider) crap in Twin Snakes.

You know what's a shame? That they didn't include Twin Snakes to make up for the loss of Metal Gear Solid 1 in the HD collection. Would have been superb. But Konami said that they only wanted to include games done by Konami, despite having the rights of Twin Snakes.

the onky thing i didnt like was motion blur effect at 1000% ON EVERY FUCKING SCENE

really it wouldve been much better if it had none...

well it's an awesome game I paid $30 for it like two years ago and liked it more that the ps1 version

Good find. Yea, that's the key part I remembered. HK wanting them to do it their way as opposed to what he did before. And I agree with you on the change. I disliked the cinemas in the GC version. Snake was depicted in a weak manner, and it was silly in some areas.

Here's one interview:

"GameSpot: To what extent is this cinematic director involved with the project?  Because the Metal Gear games are very well known for your cinematic touch, so it’s interesting that a new director should come into the project.

Hideo Kojima: To a great extent. He's very much involved.  Mr. Kitamura grew up playing up my games as a kid, and he's a fan of mine, and I'm a big fan of his films. I think there's no one better than Mr. Kitamura in the Japanese film industry right now.  And the thing is, a Metal Gear game has to be directed by me, but if it wasn't me, if it's Ryuhei Kitamura, then fine, please, do as you wish, I can say that.  We use motion actors and we do rehearsals and we create sets, and it is quite dangerous doing all the jumping and rolling and all that, and we've spent two months including the rehearsal.  Mr. Kitamura really respected and honored the original work, so like the helicopter, the chopper flying up, the scene there is pretty loyal to the original scene. But then we said, "This isn't it.  If we're going to have Mr. Kitamura do it, we want him to do it his way."  So what you're not seeing now, but what you'll see later on in the game is totally different. You'll be shocked." - source

In the end it seems that Hideo Kojima wanted Twin Snakes to be a unique game rather than an updated straight port of the original.

You didn't pay too much given how scare I imagine that game is.

While the cinemas were over the top, it is a graphically updated version of the first MGS so, not bad unless you are not a collector and own the original or didn't like it.

Costs a hell of a lot more in PAL regions, so no.

Twin Snakes is cool it's fantastic like the original, but the Ps1 version is a bit better, to me it had more emotion and better endings than TS.

I agree, even when they managed to get all the original cast to do voiceover, the acting is much richer on the original even though the recording quality was somewhat poor; the opposite is true for TTS where sometimes the characters seem dumbed down or their acting doesn't feel natural. One of the key differences in this point is the fact that they used a different actor for Gray Fox; which one you prefer is a matter of personal taste. They tried to make translation from japanese to english more accurate losing a bit of context and coherence to the western culture in the process, but this is only noticeable on very few scenes. The scenarios and the progression of the game was largerly unchanged, the athmosfere on the other hand does feel different because of graphic and audio effects.

Overall it is a great game and you bought it for a fair price since it is somewhat rare to find, so it is a nice addition to your collection weather you profer one version or the other. If you haven't played the original I would highly recommend it to you so you can experience the original vision of Kojima of this story. TTS was developed while Kojima was directing MGS3, so it was not directed by Kojima himself. Right now I'm waiting for an ultimate version of the game directed by Kojima or developed by his new LA studio, this probably won't happen for at least ten years until they finish the timeline of Big Boss on the upcoming titles.
