Forums - General - Forums, Facebook and Twitter are NOT ways to automate your personal life.

One of the things i find annoying on the Internet is things like "friends list" and people thinking living a life as a voyeur of other people's wall posts, and being an exhibitionist and posting all your stuff up consists of friendship.  Yes, they call them "friends lists", but friends?  Seriously?  The Internet is a public arena, and I don't care if people think they have privacy and can exclude things.  People had rationalized the stupidituy of Orthy post's by saying, "But they were private tweets".  Seriosuly, PRIVATE TWEETS?  I recall a day when what you did in private was behind doors, and off the record was said in person.

My take: Your personal relationships are NOT to be something automated.  And if you want to have private conversations, go out for a drink somewhere, or pick up the phone and call (or heck IM). And, BLAST IT, give some consideration for what other people do or don't want to hear.  One aspect of human relationships is a degree of respect you have for what others are interested in, and you only share with them, what they are interested in.  Do walls on Facebook where you post you are going to the store to pick up some food (complete with photos of the shelves to show what you bought or what is out) reflect this?  Heck no.  They don't.

And yes, I am aware I have aired some of my personal life.  I had done this as seeking help actually, or in some cases, promotion of stuff I have done.  But heck, I don't air all I have going on with my life on the Internet at all.  I go out to a movie or ate somewhere, I don't put it up on a wall. I figure most people aren't interested in hearing this.  Ok, there is a special for $2 Super Cheeseburgers at Nathan's in Wappinger Falls on Route 9 in NY they run sometime during the week.  You in the area, then consider it.  Tuesdays at Sonics across the street is $1 burgers, which is also good.  There is BBQ Red up the street which is a good small place.

Anyhow, that is of some value... to very little people on the Internet.

I should post less personal stuff. Especially since my full name is my username.......

You definitely get a risk of backfiring if you do that.  I know I did go to a media blog about my unemployment situation, and all I got was sheer unadulterated hatred hurled at me, with one person saying I should kill myself so his taxes could be lower.  Then there was the "I am a lazy bum".  I don't see much good comes out about posting mundate personal news, or even fairly negative one, unless it gets you help.

What gets to me now is people have their personal lives on Facebook posted via autopilot, withour regard for the person who might be viewing.  I believe Twitter becomes fairly useless because people overwhelm it with news that doesn't matter.

$2 dollar taco Tuesdays/Thursdays and $2 dollar taps in Milwaukee @ BelAire Cantina. On the corner of Humboldt and Water. If you are in the area check it out. MMmmmm. While you are at it, I live a stones throw away so come by with some delicious food and we can hang out and play some games.

(This thread is about good food suggestions right?)

On topic: I agree with you

Which is why you use a alias as a name and not post on FB and Twitter about your personal life.

I dont post pictures or videos of myself at all on the internet.

On my Twitter - all you get is my responses on youtube and auto posts of when I upload a video....I wish people would look at my twitter more :O

The thing about Facebook and Twitter is there are supposed to fill in the "gaps" of your life to people.  They both promise ways for you to automate keeping in contacts with friends and whatnot.  They sell this idea that you can end up having lots of friends, network and so on, and let all your friends know about your intimate details, all with one post.  You can end up quickly telling people "Happy Birthday" and do all this.  It is supposed to be a wonderful to save time.    What I end up seeing is minutia details personally I really don't care about.  Sure, let me know you are out of town, or going in for surgery or whatever, and keep me posted.  But I know one case where someone I went to high school with ends up posting on how he is going to deliver papers now and this and that.  I mean, "really"?  I understand putting pictures of friends and so on there, and sharing events that way, but to end up tweeting about it?  Really?

I do see the human relationship is out the window.  I don't post stuff there.  Now, I take the like of LinkedIn, which is cool though, where you post about career moves and whatnot.  At least that is of some value.   But that has a professional focus.

And on here, I think of threads like this:

Is there really a need for a poll and thread about people's bowl movements?

I really don't see the problem. If people want to share it, then let them share it. There's nearly always someone - and often lots - liking the seemingly mindless, idiotic facebook posts, so people clearly do care.

I often see my friends say something that is of absolutely no interest to me, and I wonder why the heck they're saying it. But then I realise that while I don't find it interesting, there are other friends of them who do. These people really become a lot happier from it, and it's actually a great boon for them.

And frankly, they shouldn't have to care at all that people like you and I don't care for them, because it's fun for them. And it's far, far more important that it's fun for them than that we don't particularly care for it.

I think twisting the situation might make my side more apparent. Some of my friends start political discussions on facebook, and I happily engage in those. Yet, we're very few people who actually care - the majority of my friends think such debates have no place on facebook. But I don't think any of them would go as far as to say that in consideration of them, we shouldn't be allowed to discuss it there.

In short, my point is; let people do whatever they want on facebook. They wouldn't do it if they didn't like it (with rare exceptions), and if they like it, then it's worth doing.

Thing is that it really isn't relating.  It isn't even as relating as a forum really, like here.  It is being an exhibitionist online and also being a voyeur and then posting in passing.  There isn't really any form of connecting.  And this is causing problems.  People are putting up whatever brainfart they have on a wall, and don't realize what trouble they get into for it.  Because you aren't really directly communicating with anyone, you lack senstivity to what say, or make any effort to try to be more civil with anyone.

In short, it really isn't relating, but merely a more efficient way to show off yourself to the world.
