I really don't see the problem. If people want to share it, then let them share it. There's nearly always someone - and often lots - liking the seemingly mindless, idiotic facebook posts, so people clearly do care.

I often see my friends say something that is of absolutely no interest to me, and I wonder why the heck they're saying it. But then I realise that while I don't find it interesting, there are other friends of them who do. These people really become a lot happier from it, and it's actually a great boon for them.

And frankly, they shouldn't have to care at all that people like you and I don't care for them, because it's fun for them. And it's far, far more important that it's fun for them than that we don't particularly care for it.

I think twisting the situation might make my side more apparent. Some of my friends start political discussions on facebook, and I happily engage in those. Yet, we're very few people who actually care - the majority of my friends think such debates have no place on facebook. But I don't think any of them would go as far as to say that in consideration of them, we shouldn't be allowed to discuss it there.

In short, my point is; let people do whatever they want on facebook. They wouldn't do it if they didn't like it (with rare exceptions), and if they like it, then it's worth doing.

Thing is that it really isn't relating.  It isn't even as relating as a forum really, like here.  It is being an exhibitionist online and also being a voyeur and then posting in passing.  There isn't really any form of connecting.  And this is causing problems.  People are putting up whatever brainfart they have on a wall, and don't realize what trouble they get into for it.  Because you aren't really directly communicating with anyone, you lack senstivity to what say, or make any effort to try to be more civil with anyone.

In short, it really isn't relating, but merely a more efficient way to show off yourself to the world.
