Forums - Microsoft - There is only one thing that would stop me from getting a NextBox...

I game on my pc more than either, but ps3 is much more than the 360, i havent really turned it on since i got halo 4. i have gold and used to buy it by the year, but i cancelled and bought a year worth of ps+ since i was getting so many free games. i have gold until september but i have to agree with an earlier post that netflix is horrible on xbox and is much better on ps3 which i use it for most of the time while im on the computer. but it is the ps3 exclusives that keep bringing me back as well.

Considering their current dashboard is filled with ads, whether you have gold or not, is quite telling.  Why loose out on money when people will gladly pay for something they shouldn't and get advertising money?  I actually see these extra features as a way for Microsoft to charge you more.

I read this lie time and time again.  No, it isn't "full" of ads.

It has ads and links for content available through the store but what's wrong with that, so does the PS3 and so will the next box and PS4.  Infact expect it to be even more prevalent with already downloaded demos and even more specific recommendation emails and pop ups on the two dashboards.  Why does it matter?

Hahahaha.

That is all.

Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(

Because I have to pay for gold if I wanna use my 360 as a cable box?  Microsoft is banking on everything being forced through a gold account.  Hell you can't even web browse without gold.  Kinda funny cause a few things I would check out on my 360 redirects to Internet Explorer and I can't use it cause I don't have gold.

You're not missing out on much. The consoles are plain *horrible* at web browsing. :P

Last few years I've been buying a 12 month gold subscription, but then only use the console during a Halo launch and maybe a few weeks after, then it gathers dust for another 12 months and I migrate back to the PC, waste of cash? Probably.

You never know, Microsoft might ditch the live! subscription idea with the next Xbox in favor of a different more advert-heavy business model.

It's not as bad as it was before, but when my 360 tells me to go to Ontario, where I already live in, I say it's filled with ads.

I still don't think Microsoft would be as oblivious as to actually make always-online a constant requirement for you to be able to use the console to even play a game.

With that said, I also believe that Microsoft will keep charging for access to Xbox Live, because that's where most of their profits come from and you just don't kill your money maker.

We'll welcome you into the Sony family with open arms! ;)

Its not blocking used games and its not always-on... It is whether or not the cable and Television apps will require Xbox Live Gold. That is ultimately all I want to know right now. I've given up on xbox as a gaming device but I have to admit, the prospect of a set top box that I may occasionally be able to play games on is intriguing. My current cable box only allows me to watch tv, why not replace it with an xbox?

The way I see it Xbox this gen will be what my PS3 was last gen, a multimedia device. My PS3 gets so little play time that I went ahead and sold the controller. Instead I use it as a blu ray player and netflix streaming device (netflix on xbox has a horrible interface).

I guess, the other consideration is whether or not PS4 will also have the same capabilities close to launch in which case I may not buy the nextbox after all.

That's the only thing?  Really???

What about if it gave you testicular cancer?  Or gave you an insatiable desire to eat newborn babies?  Or made you have Tourette's only when you're in fear of your life?  Oh man I can think of a bunch of reasons that would stop me from getting one ...

If you want a console to use as a media center I would seriously consider a Wii U.... after using the touchscreen to navigate I won't go back to my PS3. Watching YouTube through the browser is also pretty fantastic.... on the other hand, it's not a blue ray player, and we don't know all the details associated with the Next Box. Still, I would consider it.

Um it's the friggin next gen. So many awesome things are going to be on the nexbox that you'd be crazy not to buy it even if those simple apps are behind a pay wall. Also did you know it's possible to have your games console and your multimedia console be the same thing? Just get the 720 and you're covered!

hmm pretty sure if Sony wants to survive they'll need new income streams.... PSN will more than likely not be free or will be more limited.... and you get free stuff on XBL if you apply to reward club... you even get free movies and free games too... not like PSN+ but hey I get about 400 points reward a month... then again I heavily use my Xbox for everything and buy XBLA on discount all the time even if I don't play them right away.... that way I always have something new to play.... I have like 30 games in my back log to play.... I'm sure it's the same on PS3 but still an Xbox that collect dust is either owned by non true gamer or someone that has a real good PC rig.... cause beside better graphics I much rather play most game in my living room with a wide screen and a bad ass 5.1....

Those features requiring a Gold membership is already a given for obvious reasons.

Not obvious enough for me apparently. If they are going through Comcast or Verizon or some other cable provider and I am already paying my cable bill why would I also need xbox live to watch tv?

Because I already do this with my Xbox 360.

This whole using your 360 as a cable box is nothing new. Here in the UK, MS has a contract with Sky (the biggest television service provider) which allows Sky customers who have broadband access to use their Xbox 360 as a cable box to play Sky channels. I have been doing this for years now, watching TV in my bedroom through 360 while the living room has the set top box provided by Sky.

And guess what? To be able to watch TV on 360 I have to have Xbox Live gold AND pay for my TV service.

Since they are gearing more for a Roku/AppleTV type competitor for these things, I could easily see them removing apps you already have to pay for or can get free elsewhere from behind the paywall. There's no issue with keeping them there on the 360 because Live compared to its competitors (PSN, Nintendo).. it blows them away. You put the Xbox up next to a Roku box or something else that plays the same stuff with the same quality only free.. why would people pay?
