The PSX and Saturn have aged equally and the worst. The N64 has held up only slightly better than the PSX and Saturn. Early 3D polygon games that still look good are rare. Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Metal Gear Solid and Panzer Dragoon Zwei have amazing art styles that still impress, but viewed without nostalgia goggles they are ugly by today's standards.

Metal Gear Solid opn the PS1 looks god damn awful and art style is non existent. Take those goggles off!

Game mechanics on the other hand is something different and that has aged very well...imo anyways.

PS1 mainly for their early 3D. 2D games on PS1 (like Castlevania) look pretty damn good though. The 3D doesn't hold up too well though and I believe N64 3D aged better than PS1.  So in my view Saturn and N64 3D games held up better than most PS1 3D games.

PS1 polygons are awful, as everyone has said. And 3D games lack the crisp gameplay of the earlier 2D games to hold up in that area.

I had a moment of nostalgia there, for a moment, reading someone mentioning the N64 fog. I remember thinking it looked so cool and mysterious, lol.

Yes there were games where it "helped" (I remember some areas in OOT where it looked good) but I also think a racing game looks aweful with this fog.

wow, just googled for fog and nintendo 64:

it looks so bad... Well, I only played it on PC via emulator so I didn't care that much ;)

This is a kickback in time, is that the original Turok? I remmeber seeing screenshots that looked exactly this this 15 odd years ago and thinking "Wow!!!!"...I think it was the texture mapping that got me with the bilinear filtering, nothing like it before on a console. Even Mario 64 didn't have proper textures for most things.

But yes, it looks laughable now.

It's Turok 2 :) Well, N64 had somehow more "mature" graphics technically. They had mip-mapping, filtering, textures kept the way they had to, clipping was also better than Saturn and PSX. Saturn and PSX games always looked somewhat "dirty" and pixelated in comparison to N64. This was good for 3d games but remember Killer Instinct on 64? This looked just horrible! Also somehow devs managed to push a lot of polygons off the PSX - a point where N64 was definitely lacking.

i'm sure it's the first turok, i played turok 1 and 2 like 50 times lol

btw the fog was fun because you never saw the enemies very early.

I thought it was Turok 2 because I remember the site I took it from said Turok 2 but I don't want to argue with an expert ;)

PSone/Saturn/N64 polygon based games

I thought the games looked awful back then and every year they just look worse. Sega Dreamcast should have been the first polygonal focused system made.

Yea, all the early 3D systems like the PSX, N64, 32X, Amiga CD32, 3DO, and especially the Jaguar have all aged horribly.

2D games on the Saturn still looks absolutely brilliant though.
Pre-Atari2600 home consoles like the Fairchild Channel F have also aged terribly.

Wasn´t the 32X just an Mega Drive add on?

What are your thoughts?

PS1's polygons have not held up well at all.  There are some exceptions, but most polygon based games look pretty ugly today.
