Being a fanboy is an example of cognitive dissonance: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitive_dissonance
Cognitive dissonance also explains why fanboy-wars are mainly between PS3 and 360, because these two consoles are very similar, while the Wii was considered as something completely different that kind of played in a difference league and didn't even compete with the HD consoles.
Cognitive dissonance happens when a person wants to buy a console, but there are multiple similar consoles to choose from, with each one having its own advantages and disadvantages, making it a very tough decision.
So there is a certain danger that your actual choice for a certain console might afterwards turn out to be the wrong decision.
Now because our psyche tries to create a positive self-image, it will try to alter the perception of the various choices so that we can believe that we did the best rational choice, even if in fact we didn't: We will rather avoid any articles/information that point out negative aspects about the console we chose or points out positive aspects about the console we didn't choose, and we will instead be very interested in any articles/information that points out negative aspects about the console we didn't choose etc.
For example, by the time I bought my 360 I couldn't quite decide between 360 and PS3. In the end I decided going cheap and thus bought the 360. I soon got aware aware of various disadvantages, but I tried to rationalize my decision: "Well yes, the console is rather loud, but if only I set the TV volume level high enough then I won't realize, so that really doesn't matter!" "Ok, the 360 may be butt-ugly, but come on! It's a video game console, it's ridiculous to judge it by its looks. The PS3's superior design would hardly justify spending an additional 100 Euros!" "It's okay that my console doesn't even have a hard disc drive. I don't need that, it would have only driven up the costs. That helped me save 100 bucks." "It doesn't matter that the PS3 has free online gaming etc. I'm not willing to spend several Euros per month for that on the 360, that clearly shows it has very little importance to me. Playing online is so overrated." "I don't need Blu-Ray. Just look at the disc prices, they are sooo overpriced. And the fact that games on Blu-Ray can be much bigger doesn't really matter in practice, because there are still games for the 360 as well, so it is very well possible to create games that fit on a standard DVD. Blu-Ray does not justify the additional 100 Euros." "My 360 overheated and now has the RROD, like almost all 360s from that time. But PS3s can break too, so the same might have happened had I bought a PS3 instead."
It wasn't until about a year later when I bought myself a PS3 as well that I was cured from such delusions.
