The GameCube sold better per week than the Vita, yet for some reason it's warranted more shelf space than what the GameCube ever got....

Go figure..

The same can be said for the wii U at the moment which last few week of sales have been lower then Vita's during the same period in its life.

I think the case with the gamecube is that the retailers had already decided that the ps2 was going to monopolise...

Let's wait for E3 man. We don't know what Sony has in store for the system, and if they have anything E3 will be the place to see. A price cut and compelling software can do wonders, not unlike the recent situation in Japan. As some suggested games like GTA can help propel sales, and while some may think R* may not want to fund such a game it is not beyond the realm of possibility for Sony to have a hand in the game's development to mitigate R*'s level of risk.

It's already had one E3 and a christmas period. Not sure why e3 would matter, it already has great games, some of sony's best like uncharted on the system already.

Writing it off completly right now is foolish too. It could come back but the fact as op has said, it's selling below that of the Dreamcast. That statement alone indicates that it could be in Sony's best intrests to drop the console and cut their losses.

Yes but with what software? COD was a dud, AC was meh and as good as Uncharted is it didn't have multiplayer and that kept some people away. The great majority of my friends love the idea of the Vita but since it doesn't have compelling games they see no reason to purchase one. In fact, I was in the same camp, but then Amazon had that deal at 180 USD. I’m glad I did because I love the system and I expect great stuff from the likes of Soul Sacrifice, Tearaway and Killzone Mercenary. It has good games, but so far none are 'must buys', and that's what’s keeping people away. I say wait till E3 because at least by then if Sony has games in development or partnerships that would be the best time to show it. If there’s no must buy titles by then and it tanks later in the year then I’d say otherwise.

COD is always a dud! It's essentially the same game every year but look how well it sells! As you've said it also has some big games on the way. If it doesn't pick up soon it never will. Even during the holiday period it didn't even sell all too well with the price being dropped and bundled well. It's like keeping a person on life support Sony should wait till after another christmas then if nothing changes, flick the switch. It's costing them money they can't afford to spare.

. It needs bigger titles, and more titles. Killzone is nice, but it doesn't appeal to a lot of people. It needs more mainstream quality titles.

COD (unfortunately) is the biggest game this gen by a fair margin. Assassin's Creed is either second or pretty damn close. Uncharted is Sony's biggest excluding GT. You can't get bigger titles than what it already has. It's selling at a loss now, so a price drop doesn't look feasible, more so because Sony's financial situation. It's going to take something big, what? I have no clue.

Didn't I already highlight the issue with those games? (Those specific 3 in fact) I know COD freaks with a Vita that didn't buy it. lol That's very telling. It has the brand appeal, but even some gamers won’t buy a bad game. UC is nice, but no multiplayer = turn off for some. AC was a bad game on the Vita. I own it, hoped it was great, but it wasn't even good. It was just competent.

Playstation = The Beast from the East

Sony + Nintendo = WIN! PS3 + PSV + PS4 + Wii U + 3DS

Question: do you guys think that the Vita would sell better if it was hacked?

Nope, the hacking is only interesting for a small minority, most people don't care.

You did. I countered with there brand power. Buying a new CoD game, most of them know surely that it's essentially the same game. A game selling 10,000,000 copies or more on 1 console should be able to translate to the vita. Especially for ps3 owners.

Well it is far from dead and I see Sony as having two options. The first and obvious is to just keep pumping out great games (yes it has them) and give it a price cut.

The second solution is less probable but IMO more likely (wtf those contradict (exactly)); turn the Vita into an open emulator. They have been working towards console quality games on the system yet most people incorrectly say "it's better to just play PS3." The other side of the game spectrum is already being filled by smartphones. Well now with full remote play built into the PS4 on EVERY* game I just can't see Vita games of console IPs being successful. Already I'm wondering why I'd play Killzone: Mercenaries on it when I could stream Killzone: Shadow Fall onto it in full HD glory. Heck I even played most of GOW HD collection on my Vita. So now with remote play being seamless, what is the point of Vita games at all? It's already close to that with all of the cross-buy games. Sony should just stop making Vita games.

At the same time very few people would pay $250 just to play PS4 on the go. They first drop the price to $200 and then open up the system so users are encouraged to hack it. Suddenly this device becomes very desirable to a huge chunk of people.

Now the drawback of this is the red ocean strategy. Sony makes money off the software so if they stopped selling software they'd lose money on Vitas. That's why this isn't going to happen lol.

That's actually a very good idea there mate, although it will never happen it would be a guaranteed winner if it did some emulation of some notable classics, even if it wasn't "open" like the closed nature of the Wii VC, it would make a lot of people happy.

Of course there's the PS1 classics etc, but I'm thinking more arcade stuff.

Unfortunately, it's not how Sony does things.

Not really sure where it goes from here, I'm sure Sony will continue to support it - to be fair Sony supported the PSP long after it's last supper so no doubt there, only real hope for it I think is some PS4 cross promotion of some kind...god knows what though. (not cross-buy, that's just bullshit and only appealling to people who have it already, and even then, quite a ridiculous concept from a business point of view)

Yes, it worked wonders for the psp but hurt it software wise too.

DS was never hacked so its softwares did great.

It could help Sony if they do a bundled version with the PS4. They may make a loss like that, but could make up for it through software.

But third parties believe that Nintendo games hurt the sales of non-Nintendo games. That wasn't an issue for DS software, but for the PSP it was as soon as it was possible to play Nintendo games on it.

I thought that Dreamcast's sales were considered quite good at the time. It was Sega's financial status and the PS2's hype that killed it.

Can we get a Dreamcast vs. Gamecube comparison up in here?
