Forums - Nintendo - Lets Be Honest -- Nintendo Is Simply Unable To Support Two Hardware Platforms At Once

Seriously though, why have they not invested in more 2nd and 1st party studios or expanded their current ones?

From what I know only Retro and Monolith are actively expanding and recruiting more people. Why hasn't EAD done this?

They have.  Miyamoto stated in press interviews last week that they are actively hiring more staff for expanding software development, as HD games require significantly more resources than the games they've made in the past.  Iwata also talked about it near the end of 2011 that they were hiring like crazy at their headquarters in Kyoto

Yeah, without quality 3rd party support, it's really hard for Nintendo to put out games not only for two systems but also varying preferences.
For example for a while 'core' nintendo fans were complaining Nintendo was neglecting them for Casuals but in the later years of Wii's life, it was the other way around. Nintendo wasn't able to produce for both groups sufficiently.

I think combining their developing - all games are 3DS/WiiU (wish they'd been 3DS/Wii....) makes sense and introducing a new system that is both fully a home console and a true portable (a gamepad you can play everywhere) should be introduced sooner rather than later.

The Wii isn't Nintendo's best selling console.

Now to the topic... I disagree. During the DS and Wii era (while they were at their peak) Nintendo consistently supported both systems with some great games. At certain times Nintendo does go through some horrible and ridiculous droughts, but what do you expect? If they keep pumping out games there will no longer be games for the future. (Or very unimaginative ones, that is.) Every company goes through game droughts, Nintendo isn't alone.

The only thing I can agree with (that I don't the the OP brought up) was that Nintendo need to get games out faster.

I agree.

Anyway, Nintendo admitted all of this themselves in their Wii U games ND. That's why they're collaborating more with companies like Namco Bandai, Platinum, Atlus, etc.

As far as the 3DS goes, Nintendo will be able to slow down on that front soon as more Japanese devs take interest -- they just have to make sure those games are being localized. And then they'll be able to focus more on Wii U development.

Deflection like this suggests that you agree with the sentiment of the OP.

Indeed.

This is about Nintendo and their 1st party efforts on their consoles and handhelds, not Sony. If you guys want to talk about Sony and their 1st Party offerings, create a different thread to talk about that.

This is the final warning for this thread. The next deflection/off-topic post will be moderated.

Thanks! :D

Well we don't have much to show for it yet.

These next games better be damn brilliant for all those resources they're seeming to invest in them.

I say the same thing applies to Sony and the Vita. I think this is the reason the Xbox 360 is so successful in America. Sony and Nintendo are trying to push multiple platforms while Microsoft is solely focused on 1.

Can anyone answer why Nintendo, in the last 8 or so years (since they started printing money with the DS and then Wii) has not invested *heavily* in the creation of studios, expanding their horizons with new IPs, courting indie developers, and building a competitive network infrastructure? What have they, exactly, done with all those billions? let them sit in the bank?

I think Nintendo's future (and they probably won't like it) will be one unified hybrid console/portable platform as others have said and as has been widely speculated.

If they had 1 platform instead of 2, their lineup for that hardware this year for example would be ...

Fire Emblem Awakening
Luigi's Mansion 2
Lego City Undercover
Wii Fit U
Wii Party U
Pikmin 3
The Wonderful 101
Mario Kart U
Pokemon X/Y
Tomadachi Collection 2
New Super Luigi (DLC)
Zelda: Wind Waker Reborn

Notable Third Party Exclusives:

Dragon Quest VII Remake
Monster Hunter 4
Dragon Quest X HD
Shin Megami Tensei IV

Notable Third Party Multiplats:

Need For Speed
Rayman Legends (lol)
Watch Dogs
Assassin's Creed IV (?)
