Yeah, without quality 3rd party support, it's really hard for Nintendo to put out games not only for two systems but also varying preferences.
For example for a while 'core' nintendo fans were complaining Nintendo was neglecting them for Casuals but in the later years of Wii's life, it was the other way around. Nintendo wasn't able to produce for both groups sufficiently.
I think combining their developing - all games are 3DS/WiiU (wish they'd been 3DS/Wii....) makes sense and introducing a new system that is both fully a home console and a true portable (a gamepad you can play everywhere) should be introduced sooner rather than later.
