No I think Nintendo will continue. Sony may be done with them now though and just focus on Phones and Tablets. Nintendo has neither of these and sells a ton better. They also sell at a lower cost than those devices so they can continue to have appeal.
Grilled cheese sandwiches ftw btw!
It all depends on Japan to say the truth. The 3DS isn't really selling well outside of Japan and the Vita just isn't selling too well. If the Japanese market is profitable for Nintendo then they may just keep handhelds going for that market and use the other territories to get Christmas sales.

No. I imagine Sony might drop out of the handheld race next gen if Vita sales don't go up and concentrate on their core business, which is home console gaming. Nintendo, on the other hand, won't drop out of the handheld market for sure. The 3DS isn't selling hot right now but it's still profitable for them and there's room for future growth for the platform (especially in the west this year, with the console finally getting a decent lineup).

Even if the worldwide sales potential would shrink to 50m (25m Japan, 25m rest of the world), that's still enough for Nintendo to keep going. However, Sony will most likely bow out after this generation as their video game systems require much higher sales than the Vita will achieve in order to be profitable. |
do you think sony might make their strategy more similar to nintendo in the handheld market?

We will see a ton of those cheap smartphone developers die, smartphone gaming is more a fad than anything else. I wouldn't be surprised if we will see an all out crash on the market. Sure, some devices will always be sold, as they are the new cell phones, but it won't be the hot item to get forever and the ridiculous growth also will stop eventually, followed by a decline. There's a lot of hype about smartphones nowadays, but hypes come and go while handheld consoles have been around for more than two decades. They may not generate record breaking sales, but they are far more reliable. Look at this way: Whoever buys a Handheld has a interest in gaming for sure. The Hardware base therefore gives you quite a good picture about the chances of a software product. But when someone buys a smartphone, you have no idea whatsoever, what it's gonna be used for.
I'm talking a lot of yadda-yadda here, but it all comes down to this: Don't believe the hype. Handheld consoles are here to stay.

Sarcasm?

As long as Nintendo's games can only be found on their systems(handheld in this case), people will have a reason to buy an Nintendo handheld. As for Sony, well like a lot of things about them these days, its uncertain.....

No, I'm pretty sure that Nintendo said that they were already working on the 3DS's successor.
