Forums - Website Topics - Get rid of the point system on the site

At first I was going to disagree because I didn't think it would cause much harm. But after I thought about it, I agree. The potential for the points to be beneficial is completely nonexistent; no one is going to improve the site because of points. On the other hand, the potential to harm the site does exist, even if there's a severely low chance of if happening, as there are some people who let the points go to their head. So yeah, I agree. Get rid of points and every other feature who serve no benefit to the forum. It's guaranteed that such removal wouldn't harm the forum, but it might help the forum, even if by only a little.

I enjoy the points system. Therefore, you are wrong.

But are you saying this just to spite me?

Not just to spite you; I actually like the points system.

Perhaps you do enjoy the points, but that doesn't destroy my argument. I never said people don't enjoy the points; in fact I implied that some do when I said "some let the points get to their head." My point [pun not intended] was that points do not improve the site. You may enjoy the points, but so do many spammers on here. Clearly, mere enjoyment of the points does not benefit the site.

How have the points caused you to improve the site?

What exactly constitutes "benefit" to the site? I'd argue that anything that people like about the site and that improves people's experience on here is a pretty big benefit. This would obviously be lost if the points system was trashed, meaning there is some sort of tradeoff.

You seem to be looking at the value of this site in some dull and monochrome way. Sure, points don't make me improve the site, but they do make me happy. I'm sure there are others too. Even if it causes some miniscule amount of spam, I'd say their entertainment value easily outweighs this.

Same argument could be used by trolls who say trolling should be allowed. Or extreme spammers (and I mean EXTREME spammers) that you might find on other unmoderated sites who post dozens upon dozens of the same thread just to say literally the same shit because they think its clever. Or perverts who post shemale porn. These people could all say "it gives me enjoyment, therefore it improves the site". In fact, I could use that same argument and say it would give me enjoyment if points didn't exist, therefore the lack of points would benefit the site. But that's a weak argument.

As you can see by my number of points, i dont care at all. I dont have any misconception that someone with lots of points is a better poster.

You're making comparisons to other things, but the logic isn't really consistent. The reason trolling shouldn't be allowed is because even though the trolls like it, a significant number of other people are justifiably bothered by it. Same for your other examples.

The points system, on the other hand, doesn't really have anything inherently bad or annoying about it. You claim you dislike it, but very few people actually do. Even in this thread, you only really see is apathy and "it might cause spam". No one hates it in and of itself. On the other hand, I, along with several other people, genuinely enjoy it. To me, this suggests that there is enough value in it for the site to maintain it.

At the very least, this definitely defeats the point you made saying that there is absolutely no harm it can cause to the site.

Exactly, some people may enjoy certain actions, but that's not what's important. What's important is if those actions cause more benefit to the site or harm to the site. And many people would argue that points add more harm to the site. Considering so few people actually enjoy points, I'd say its worth upsetting the small group of people in order to please the larger group by cracking down on spam.

And some people do hate it. The OP for example.

You are right that It would cause some harm to the site. But I was under the assumption that most people either didn't care about points, or hated them altogether. I wasn't expecting someone to actually admit to enjoying them. It actually seems like you're the only one who does care. The people who hate them currently outnumber the people who enjoy them. So removing them would make more people happy than upset, therefore benefiting the site.

. I'm curious, why do you enjoy points?
