I definitely think they can.  I have a lot of faith in Naughty Dog.  

I don't think that'd be the right way to go about it.  At the very least if they make a Crash title, the first one should be a throw back to older titles.  Though with some updates that they weren't able to do at the time due to hardware constraints.  It may not appeal to you, but I think a lot of people would love to see a new title that reminds them of the older days.
