Retro gaming is awesome. I've never sold any of my games and don't plan to.

I'm the same way. It's getting harder and hard to organise and store, not to mention maintain, so much stuff. One of these days I need to take a full inventory and make record of it all for insurance purposes.

Yeah me too. My old room at home is starting to look like the final scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Atari 800 and Atari ST here.

Some of my childhood favorites: Wizard of Wor, Ali Baba, Archon, Arkanoid.

Wizard of War was awesome in 8bit.  I am assuming you went Arkanoid on the ST, as I don't recall it really being on the 8bit computers.

Nice. I have an Atari 800 XL, but I never had a an ST. I've read it was an amazing machine. I miss the days when computers brands actualy meant different hardware and software like consoles.

BTW: What's that Falcom game in your sig? I'm a fan of the Ys series, but I don't know all Falcom games.

It's funny, my fondest childhood memory of the ST is that the cursor turns into a bee when it's "busy" loading, and I'd be sitting there trying to sting things with it until the game loaded. Haha.

As for Falcom, they have 2 big series. One is Ys which is fairly well known outside Japan. The other is their RPG series Legend of Heroes (also known as Dragon Slayer for the first 2 games) which is unfortunately not very popular out West, although I do believe there are English releases all the way up to the first chapter of #6. My sig is what will be the new entry in Legend of Heroes this year.

Yeah, I love the Ys series. I have many, but not all of them. I have the first one on Master System and the one on Genesis and the ones on PSP. It was a pretty clunky series untill resently. I've never heard of Legend of Heroes. What kind of game is it, an Action Adventure like Ys or more of a standard RPG, strategy, etc.?

The old Ys games are pretty retro, I played Ys1&2 PC-Engine version and it was good for its time but definitely feeling the age now. The SNES games were also pretty simplistic. They started changing it up a bit in their PC era with 3D, smoothing out the game systems and making more complicated battles, but it still has the same heart. It's hard to believe Falcom has really changed so little at its core since the 80's, in a good way unlike certain other big Japanese RPG developers who have changed far too much.

Legend of Heroes is more of a standard RPG than Ys, the battle system is sort of hybrid between your regular turn based and also strategy RPG system. There is grid based movement, weapons have various ranges, spells with casting time and area effects, but there aren't things like bonuses for hitting in the side/back, terrain and height calculations, or friendly fire that's present in some other SRPG. Here's an example illustrating the battle grid:

Legend of Heroes is also very story and adventure focused with a lot of text compared to Ys. Unlike Ys the games they don't all follow one guy's adventures, instead with stories continuing across various numbers of games. 1&2 were a set, 3-5 were another story, and now the latest five games starting with LoH6 (third chapter shown above) are a new series that is still continuing. I think the sheer amount of text combined with low overseas sales is a barrier to localization at this point. Falcom's writers do an excellent job though.

So a connected question to this thread, anyone in favor of there being a retro gamer forum, to discuss games of the past, but also newer stuff that is like games of the past? Pretty much to get away from the Call of Duty crowd and the mass appeal stuff? Also to debate what would qualify? I can put a poll up in the website discussion forum on here.

...Does GBA count as Retro?

I love retro gaming!

At this time, it can be argued to be.  What is retro is debatable.  On VGChartz, what can be seen as retro would be stuff that isn't in the other forums, as I see it, and also stuff like the games of the past, even on other platforms.

I think it's a fine idea :)

You could ask axumblade or another mod about creating an official retro thread.
