Forums - Microsoft - What does Microsoft need to show at their reveal to interest you?

Top dog the video game.

Seriously no one mentioned Alan wake 2!?! If microsoft shows it off I will officially be buying a 720 on release but thats just my gamer brain talking.
If microsoft wants to win and actually show off games on the presser GTA 5 must be one of the titles, throw in Bf4 and tell us all that MS will have great support from DICE and make it the new xbox shooter destination and of course bring us some new RPG's

As for XLGold they have to make the price justified, in the US they are on track to do it but in the EU there so much things we miss out on and make the super deals they are having next week a monthly thing - every month certain games gets their prices slashed off with up to 80%.

I do not want to see any Gears game anymore the series died after gears 3 so MS better rest it a bit after judgement because I see no reason to rush Gears out, Halo 5 needs the atmosphere of the human earth in Halo 3 - release it 2 years into the lifecycle and make everyone crave for more Halo. As a lasting touch they need to show off some of those 4 new IP's and RYSE

not much, i am a huge halo and pgr fan which means i will buy a nextbox anytime if halo won't be a pc/xbox franchise next gen and my friends wouldn't buy a nextbox with halo.. the question is when i will buy it, if they show pgr as release title i will probably buy it at release, if no pgr and no new ip i would care about probably only with the halo release or close to that.

i think it will be like this for me:

pgr at release and i will buy nextbox at release and ps4 one year after release. if it won't have pgr at release or another awesome game, i will buy ps4 at release and nextbox one year after.

so, yeah, if they show pgr they sold nextbox to me. if not it depends but will only change the time of purchase.

Plenty of variety of 1st party titles (that aren´t Kinect titles), as that was the main reason I switched from the 360 to the PS3.

1. New IPs, not Halo 5 or Gears 4
2. console
3. OS

If the bullshit about blocking used games and always online is true then none of the above will matter.

exclusive MGS, Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Persona 5 and the list goes on and on. yeah its simply not happening, my love for Japanese games will always lead me to playing Sony and Nintendo consoles

I don't think I'll be getting the next Microsoft console in the upcoming generation. The last two consoles they've released only provided me with a very small handful of games I enjoyed (Ninja Gaiden on OG Xbox, and Lost Odyssey on the 360). I already have a Wii U just waiting to get the PS4 and I'll have all the systems I need for next generation. Unless of course Microsoft happens to show off many games from many genres, but even then I'd be skeptical because they dropped the support early for JRPGS on the 360..

Forza 5. Also if rumors are true that is backwards compatible with 80% of the 360's library of games that's a huge plus also.

Source for this? Because it's really, really hard.

According to leaked specs Durango will sport basically the same CPU as the PS4 ( an 8-core modified AMD Jaguar at the same clock) with a slightly poorer GPU part.

Thus they have to deal with the very same architecture change as PS3->PS4: from in-order PowerPC to out-of-order x86-64. There's not nearly a big enough leap in computational power to allow real-time software-based emulation. Code structure changed as well, because -yes- directx, but the 360 setup -as all consoles- had its peculiarities. So I can see only 3 ways:

1) every 360 title has to be ported, recompiled and made available for download. Reuiring investment by the original developers who own the code, for very low return. Can't see this happening save for a few titles, same as HD remasters in this generation.

2) a version of the original hardware is included, like in ps1-to-ps2 or ps2-to-early-ps3 or GC-to-Wii. This brings the price up and make the engineering and production harder. Possible, but unlikely for economic reasons. I think MS will rather spend that money in keeping the inclusion of Kinect affordable as that ties in with their living-room hub strategy.

3) something like xbox-to-x360 is pulled off, which as I understand was a partially out-of-band  version of emulation where you downloaded a profile that offered sections of recompiled code for the new CPU and JIT library call patching. I think something similar happens with the downloadable PS2 games on PSN. Again, this time there's a much lesser computational power leap, so that sounds unlikely for demanding titles. Could work for some smaller downloadable games.

All in all, I can see them offering compatibility for a selection of their first party big guns, but not a general purpose solution. So... source?

Well it only a rumor so there is really no reliable source but I don't think it will be as hard as you think the orginal XBox and 360 where completely different and the pulled of a 20% compatability with older titles (orginal X-Box Intel based CPU and NVIDIA GPU, 360 IBM based CPU and AMD/ATI GPU).  This time around MS is sticking with AMD/ATI for there GPU I don't think it will be that impossible to achieve a high rate of backwards compatatibility.  PLus based on rumors the Nextbox is a lot more powerful then the 360 3 core vs 8 core and 512MB RAM vs 8GB.

All Microsoft has to show is Alan Wake 2 and it will be better than anything Sony did. I would also like to see Mr. Scratch come out on stage and take jabs at Sony.

Well, of course it is much more powerful than the 360. Gflops or MHz comparisons mean very little between different architectures, but let's say its something like a factor 3x-4x in practical CPU tasks. For emulating a different architecture, that's generally not enough.

To put things in perspective: by the time 360 and PS3 came out, they were powerful machines by PC standards. They were multi-core/threaded machines with innovative features in CPU or GPU setup. Xbox 360 with its 3 multithreaded cores at 3.2 GHz has probably close to 10 times the CPU power of the Pentium III in the original XBox. And yet, the XBox emulation in the 360 relied on pre-transcoded code you had to download, and the PS3 never got a full software real-time PS2 emulator.

When Durango and PS4 will come out, they will be good bang-for-bucks machines, with more efficient architectures and custom-tailored software and services, but quite under-powered in brute strength terms when compares to mid-range PCs of their time.

Now, if emulating a 360 in software on current PC architecture (because that's what Durango and PS4 basically will be) were easy, or just reasonably doable, there would already be an ecosystem of 360 emulators, at least for high end PCs.

So, if we're talking of pure software emulation here, that seems extremely unlikely to happen. Hardware BC, or at least hardware-assisted emulation is much more likely to be technically feasible: It becomes a problem of costs, engineering, manufacturing yield and policy over the content. And we know very little of MS' business plan with their next machine so that can only be a big question mark.
