Forums - Sony - BREAKING NEWS: PS4 devkits 1.5GB RAM!!!! [UPDATE]

just think how much better these games will look

More memory does not equal better games.    The quality of the games are affected by processing power and the graphics capabilities.  The ONLY time where more memory is necessary is if you build a bloated piece of camel dung game that either bleeds memory or it doesn't page out memory like a proper game should.  You just don't need to have 4 gigs of mainboard addressable memory in use unless something is seriously wrong with how the console is developed(os taking too much)  or the game is developed.

The ONLY reason I see why Sony sees the need to put 8gigs in is a> a penis war in specs b> a concession that their imagined 62 year life span on this console might need 8 gigs for games somewhere down the line.

Like it's been said, all of that data that goes into that memory must...be...processed....first.    The technology to quickly process 8 gigs of memory with all of the frame rates people are going to come to expect is no there and its going to be a joke if game makers start making 8gig bloatware for ANY of the next gen.

I play a pc game where I tend a couple stores and then my main character.  They're all running at 48FPS, 1600x1400.  Each takes about a gig of memory(i have 16 with 8 sitting there with its thumb up its ass no matter what i do) and they look better than anything sitting on ms or sony right now.

Sorry, just don't see 8 gigs of main system memory being used effectively unless they have a leprecaun inside it passing data between all the internal components.

honestly an additional 4 GB of ram isnt going to make graphics otherworldly better. Infact I doubt it will have too much of an impact at all as far as graphics are concerned. The most important thing in making graphics is the power of the GPU behind it. SInce the GPU doesnt appear to have changed from the devkits then dont assume the graphics are going to get two times better just because the ram is twice as much

However the ram is useful for alot of other things such as load times and AI and behind the scenes stuff so thats good news.

Long Live SHIO!

I heard they wanted to match Microsoft's 8GB... I assumed the devs knew already, though... And, most of us were impressed with what we saw with 4.

Maybe now, we wont have to hear as much from PC only gamers... IT'LL GETS BETTER on PS4.

But, i wanna see different types of game play that doesn't feel like some cheap game 3 people made on their windows XP...

What I've been hearing is that it was Guerrilla that convinced SCE to go with 8gb, much like how Epic convinced Microsoft to go with 512mb of ram in the 260 by showing them a demo of Gears of War running on 256mb of ram vs the same demo on 512mb of ram back in 2004.

I wouldn't expect too big a change in Killzone: Fallen Shadow's visuals before launch.

I wonder who made the call to up the RAM instead of the GPU or CPU where it's actually worth something.

This news make me pretty certain the the Next Box has 8 gigs, Sony had to make a last minute change to match it.

It's pretty much confirmed at this point that the next Xbox has 8gb of ram.  However, it's DDR3 ram as opposed to ps4's GDDR5, which has a much higher bandwidth, and all reports say that 3.5gbs of the next Xbox's 8gbs of ram are reserved for the OS.   Even when the ps4 was speculated to have only 4gbs of ram, with 512mb said to be reserved for the OS, it was presumed it would still outperform the next Xbox because of that crucial difference in bandwidth.

There's actually a whole thread dedicated to this discussion on neogaf right now:

People do realise some of this 8GB ram will be for the OS, video encoding on the stream (the last 15 mins of game play) etc right?

4GB dedicated to games will probably be the norm.

So if you think about it I dont think those game where even designed with 4gb dedicated to games in mind beofre the upgrade to 8gb

Intersting, although I'll hold off on any judgement until I see games on both systems.... still time for MS to tweak the system specs as of now.

I don't know shit about game development, how will this effect the launch titles? What exactly will be improved if they now utilize all 8GB?
