The approval from dev's is totally expected. I mean which dev would be upset about the PS4 adopting x86 architecture over the old cell stuff?

Sony: "Ps4 will have x86 architecture and will be developer friendly!"

Microsoft: "Hi, have you heard of the Xbox 360? The console that's been around for 7 years and is baesd on the x86 architecture?"

Also, this: http://www.ign.com/articles/2005/05/20/e3-2005-microsofts-xbox-360-vs-sonys-playstation-3

I own game devices from many platforms, but in my opinion Sony with the PS4 is just playing catch-up. Microsoft is extremely capable of stomping all over the PS4 specs with their next Xbox. Although that doesn't really matter in the end, mostly it's developer friendly that they need and Microsoft has had that for the past 7 years. Again, Sony is just playing catch-up.

The sources that were right about PS4s rumours also say the Nextbox doesn't support used games, is always online and requires Kinect, has 8GB DDR3 ram and is 1,2 TFLOPs.

The only advantage MS had was its ease of use for devs and it loses that advantage with PS4. Microsoft will have a hard time now that the PS4 offers the same developer friendly environment. Devs like Jonathan Blow was not even approached by Microsoft and he's making The Witness (timed) exclusive entirely out of goodwill to Sony with no money involved

Let's be fair here.  Rumors said that BOTH next gen consoles wouldn't support used games.  Aside from that, nobody would be that stupid to block used games.  I still don't understand why that rumor even exists.  It always pops up a few months before the next gen of consoles and is always squashed when the reveal happens.

One other bit of interseting information, of the top 20 games available on both PS3 and Xbox 360, the Xbox 360 versions outsell the PS3 versions almost every single time.  That isn't due to developers not liking one or the other, that's players/customers choosing Xbox 360 over the PS3.

While Sony switching to x86 is good for them, it's not going to be enough to crush MS, nor put pressure on them.

No they didn't, rumors only said the Nextbox was always online and blocking used games, no said rumors surfaced for PS4. The rumours have the same sources and they were right about PS4. MS might scratch those ideas after hearing PS4 is not doing these pathetic anti consumer shenanigans.

The CPU in the 360 isn't X86. It was made by IBM and is PowerPC based.

The main reason MS have an advantage in this area is becuase of DirectX. By the sound of things though, Sony have definitely caught up in this area and are rumoured to also have an API that allows them to code closer to the metal than the Durango kits.

I think you are again seeing PS4 as a PC and not a closed system. Every generation we go through this, and every gen it's the same thing. Even thought these consoles indvidual parts are not as complex as the PCs best, the way they are integrated together make them much more powerful than they look. Remember that with the PS4 people will be coding directly to the chips, no directx or other API. The chips always have custom interfaces allowing direct access to eachother that is just not possible on PC. Being a set in stone spec devs know exactly what they are working with.

With that said here is what is great about this for the PC. Right now PS3/360 and low mid range laptop and desktop cards are the baseline. Devs have to make the games with those specs in mind because, that's were the userbase is. With PS4, and hopefully XB3 both having 8GB of memory, and similar to PC tech, they can start to make those the minimum spec. That means High end GPU's will start to see games that actually take advantage of them, and that means nvidia and amd wll start to push the limits more. I expect to see GPU's with 8GB GDDR5 in no time, and they will be followed by 10GB and 12GB in no time.

I dont think that is possible. I am not a programmer so i can be wrong. but i think that statement is completley wrong and not even possible.

It's actually correct. On consoles, devs have access to lower level APIs and can optimize the code for the hardware. That allows a much bigger performance using weaker hardwares. It's (almost) like programming on Java/C# or C, the latter one give way more performance.

I thought Sony only patented a system to lock them, oh well, they confirmed they will not anyways.

With Sony not blocking used games I can't imagine Microsoft doing it with their next gen.  It would be business suicide.

Now I know you have serious problems with this. Let me point the ways by looking at the pictures.

1) Depth of Field. It is not even existent on the PS4.

2) Particles. There isn't even snow in the PS4 version. The flaming rock looks like sometihng from back in UT2004.

3) Textures. Look at his armor. Look at the ground. Look at the arch behind him.

Honeslty, it all comes together to look like the bottom image is a cinematic form Diablo 1.

Edit: This is not a case of "graphics are subjective," these are very hard, measureable technologies that are lacking in the PS4 version. I am willing ot accept that some poor bastard got the shot end of the stick at Epic and did the port in 2 days.

Sorry but I need to risk the two sentences because it's a entry different scene...

Walk me thourgh your logic on how you discounted Depth of Field and Particle effects again. DoF is pretty universal for ANYTHING, kinda like AA. Also as I said the Particle effects just suck in the PS4 one.

UE4 on PS4 looks like a hot mess, I miss the real-time GI and advanced materials shown in the first demo. I have no idea how Epic fucked up a tech demo so bad, I mean fuck.

PS4 looks to be a great console tho

@TheVoxelman on twitter

Check out my hype threads: Cyberpunk, and The Witcher 3!

Come on, seriously, that UE4 comparison does not favor the PS4 at all. And they're also at different levels of zoom, different angle and different lighting.

And like vlad has pointed out, there is no depth of field or particle effects and the flames are rendered poorly. Overall, the difference is big and not in the PS4's favor, not even close.

PC's won't need to play catchup, you can fire up a 4k display with all effects and full AA and all filters, to suggest that consoles have the best visuals and a tech advantage is folly. Metro 2033, which came out in march 2011 looks a lot better than anything shown for the PS4, at least with everything maxed out in DX11 mode (no mods). The particle effects are among the best ever seen, the lighting and textures are grand and the depth of field is amazing both in brighter and darker environments. Not to mention how incredible some games can look with mods. Unfair comparison? Not really, that's one out of many distinct advantages of PC gaming.

People are getting carried away with the PS4 and consoles in general, its always the consoles that are playing catch-up with the PC, not the other way around.
I don't know why a lot of console gamers think that if a game looks bright and shiny, it has world class visuals, there's more to it than that.
