Forums - PC - CPU Overclock fail, need advice

So I decided to OC for the first time on my i7 920 @ 2.67 GHz.  Tho after 10-20 mins the computer randomly restarts.  I heard that usually this means the CPU Vcore isn't getting enough voltage.  So I upped the voltage again and same result.  It shouldn't need this much voltage to work....

This is what I changed bios and changed the following.

CPU Frequency: 2.67 GHz -> 3.00 GHz

QPI Clock Ratio: Auto -> x36

Base Clock: 133 -> 150

Uncore Clock Ratio: Auto -> 16

System Memory Mult: Auto -> 8

CPU Vcore: 1.25V -> 1.2875V->1.325V

QPI/Vtt: 1.2V -> 1.34V

DRAM: 1.5V -> 1.64V

Anything look wrong?

you should not be messing with with the voltage since 3ghz overclock is not that much, i just increased the blk and ram and it worked for me.

So too much voltage makes it so it shuts down every 10-20 mins?

Werid

Also what's BLK?

BCLK = base clock, i missed the C sorry.

i dont know if its over volting but try leaving the voltage to auto and see what happens, at least you can eliminate over volting as the culprit if it doesnt work.

I would suggest bringing things to stock and then upping everything 1 by 1, starting with CPU. You shouldn't have to add much voltage (if any) to get to 3 Ghz, unless you want to go more. Once you are happy with your CPU overclock, move on to memory...and take note when the Pc starts failing.

Also install core temp or similar and measure your CPU temperature.

Why do you need to overclock, an i7 at 2.67 isn't a bad CPU, do you have DDR3 Ram, what's your graphics card? Did you try to overclock the GPU as well?
I run into problems if I overclock both the CPU & GPU.

not sure if you need to OC a 920 at all if you are just playing games. The shutting off could be due to overheating as well.

You really shouldn't mess with components if you don't know what you are doing. But for a start:
PC shuts down: OVERHEATING (or any of the other 99 problems)
PC reboots: Vcore problem (or any of the other 99 problems)
You probably still have the default fan on your processor. These cheapo-fans are not very good at dissipating additional heat when overclocking.

I use Fraps which is CPU intenstive.  It can handle half sceen 60 fps no problem, but struggles with full screen at fps.

I don't wanna push for 60 fps but OCing might make 30 fps more stable or able to push 40 fps.

For chris_wing, my GPU is a GTX 660 Ti, not overclocked.

O and its been rebooting not shutting down, changed in the OP.

Try downloading some OC tools that allows you to monitor temp of cpu cores and stress test each component.
