Forums - General - Fast food differences between countries

Nice thread.
When I was in Japan, the McDonald's I went to was very different from the norm.
You ordered and then sat down. They brought the food to your table and while you waited you were given green tea.
The menu was half soy-based....teriaki and eel etc.
It was pretty great.
Much better than over here in usa.

That's how you localize.

Poffertjes! Yeah i would consider it fastfood but they aint common any more.. Its hard to find a "poffertjes kraam" where they sell it fresh.. Nowadys you just get them from the supermarket and make them yourself..

There was another one, but the name escapes me right now.

It's a batter type mixture that gets fried on a flat hotplate. It's like a really firm pattie of batter when cooked...

do you mean pannekoek or stroopwafel?

Nope. Neither of those...

I'll need to get back to you with that one...

I miss that most from The Netherlands.
Here they put plain vinegar on fries, just not right.

Looks good. What does the sauce consist of?

It's just the standard Mayonaisse or Mayo, not the fake healthy kind but the real oil + egg yolk + vinegar base.

Another favorite, frikandel speciaal met patatje sate saus.

deep fried minced meat hot dog, cut open with mayonaise, ketchup and onions, plus fries with a spicy peanut butter based saus.

Looks really nice. I'm getting hungry now...

When I was in Japan back in 08, I noticed the portions in a Mcdonalds' meal were significantly smaller. Most noticeably the burgers. The burgers were smaller.

in the Philippines and other countries in asia... they sell rice in McDonalds, KFC, etc etc...
also in the Philippines instead of lemonade they have pineapple juice...

mcdonals also have spaghetti...

they use the gravy on fried chicken in all the fast food... lots of them

all the servings are Super SMALL...

Nice! Is the rice a side dish, like fries?

Is there a reason why Lemonade isn't around, or is it just that pineapple juice is more popular?

lemonade is not popular in the philippines... they usually have pineapple juice and/or lemonade.....  i dont think they even grow lemons there

Interesting. How is the rice consumed? Usually at, for instance, a KFC, the only cutlery that's needed is a spoon (for the potato and gravy, and that's if you decide not to scoop it up with the chips). Do the fast food joints provide any complimentary cutlery for this?

Localisation does influence a lot of menus, it seems, especially if there's an abundance of a product. (It's how we ended up with Vegemite. Lots of leftover yeast extract from the local brewery).

When the hell were you in Japan? And why the hell didn't you mention this when you commented on my TokyoGameShow08 photo album a few years back!?

Very nice! Did they still have the beef burgers at all? I'm guessing if so, they'd charge quite a bit for a beef burger, considering the price of beef in Japan.

I like the tea thing though. It reminds me of Yum Cha.

Were the smaller burgers beef based?

Perhaps that's how they deal with the higher price of beef over there...

I thought both Checkers and Rallys existed in the US as the result of a merger between the two companies.
