Sounds like Sony is trying to differentiate itself by advertising itself as a "hardcore" machine for "adults". Dunno what that means for the Move or how they'll respond if MS de-emphasizes Kinect for the next XBox.

Then again, if Microsoft does push Kinect as the foundation of the next X-Box and focuses more on the whole "entertainment hub" concept, Sony's marketing message could work. But then again, some people argue that XBox live and network effects (having your friends on Xbox) is more influential than exclusive games.

I think it's all really interesting and exciting how it'll play out though.

I love all this trash talking, I just love it damn it. Its like the Sega/Nintendo days, good memories.

well it's a hundred times better than when they used to directly insult the competition's userbase. These ads seem more like, "you all deserve better"

It's meaningless. Absolutely inconsequential. Their advertising agency said, hey, let's do this to generate some buzz and someone OK'd it. Getting upset over it is just silly, and anyone who -does- get upset wasn't going to buy your product, anyway. I don't see people pouting when other industries do it.

They are right! Every time i'm on XboxLive a 12year old calls me a ni***r or a fa***t.

that is more of a problem with online gaming in general, not really something you just find on xbox live.  Little kids don't know how to behave responsibily under the cover of anonymity...

Whatever I really don't see this working out for them in any meaningful way. Maybe Sony is trying to harken back to their advertising antics from a couple generations ago, but times have changed, and gamers have changed with them. Attacking the competition just doesn't resonate with the audience anymore. Hell it doesn't seem to resonate with any audience. The only thing it is likely to accomplish is to get Sony ignored. Which is actually the opposite of what they want.

I live in a battleground state, and during the last election cycle our televisions were smeared with attack advertising. It accomplished absolutely nothing. It didn't even matter how they dressed it up either. The exit polls were exactly what they were three months earlier. People aren't just turned off by the advertising. They turn the advertising off. My neighbors and I did the only sensible thing. We muted the commercial breaks, channel surfed, or watched some channel that didn't have commercials.

Nobody has time for this kind of crap anymore. I think they would have done better advocating for their product rather then leveling snide remarks at the competition. People are looking for the positive, and they are looking to get excited about something. Rather then being down on something.

I agree and I'm surprised by all this, since it was only days that we learned they hired the same guys that make the google ads, so how is it they are reverting back to an antiquated strategy? Seems odd.

Dodece makes a great point. To use a political term, all these types of ads do is "rile up your base". The people what would have bought your product anyway. The consumers that aren't diehards either ignore or are just plain turned off by these type of ads. You want to appeal to as many consumers as possible; not piss off potential customers.

I love it, reminds me of the old days of gaming. It's not like it's anything harsh, just poking fun like you do with friends. Anyone that's getting upset by it needed a sense of humor.

Bro, bro, bro, bro, bro, bro, bro, bro, BRO. It could be photoshoped for all we know.
