In terms of the pre-announcement period, it would be tough for the Wii U to even be a contender in generating as much hype, given it was a surprise announcement as part of Nintendo's end of year financials in April 2011... It didn't have a big event hyped up for a few weeks. There are plenty of other examples to point to though. I remember reading gaming magazines in the 90s, before the internet was that relevant, that had a latest roundup of rumours about the next generation in every issue. If anything the fact you had to wait a month between issues helped build up the anticipation even more. E3 seems less exciting these days for similar reasons. The instantaneous nature of everything has dulled the excitement for me somewhat compared to back then. People who've only ever known that might not feel the same way of course... |
they are in a completely different situation i agree. but i just compared the two because they are the only two home consoles to be announced in a VERY long time. and i would agree about the hype thing, i was too young for me to read about magazines and stuff, but the internet does know how to kill excitment sometimes, the worst things are leaks, like when they leaked beyong two souls before E3, that pretty killed a lot of hype for sony's E3, and people started expecting even more of it

| justinian said: I think the OP question should have been "Have you ever seen another console get as much media attention as the PS4 is getting before its OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT?" The original question "Have you ever seen another console get as much media attention as the PS4 is getting before its launch?" is asked far too early to expect an sensible answer. After the 20th it could all go downhill and the launch is ages away, and yes I understood what the question is asking, It's just that the last word used in the question creates confusion. I think it's pretty much the same for most consoles AT THIS STAGE... but judging hype can be subjective. What's important is that it seems not to be any worse hype-wise than what has gone before. |
but i guess thats where common sense and logic kicks in!

But that's not very nice...
I guess the only parallel which we can draw is the WiiU (which was randomly announced) and the Vita (which only had buzz shortly before launch).
We shall see how this goes.

Sometimes I'm not very nice.
If the rules are set like that, then the question in OP is worthless...

off topic: I really like Robert on TV.
MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

There were lots at Time Square without release....... *There are non for PS4 at the moment. |
Well of course, it hasn't even been announced yet. before the Wii was announced there was never this type of hype on the internet.

The Wii never had this type of hype before the reveal date on the internet. The interwebs are eating this PS4 Feb 20th date stuff up and fast! I am falling for it too. One more day!
Well, its certainly the most "hype" Ive seen surrounding a console that hasnt even been announced or revealed.
Wii hype came after it had been shown. It was far, far bigger than what Sony have with this.

The OP isn't worthless it makes a lot of sense. How many consoles can you recollect that had this much press before the announcement? Microsoft is going to have some huge buzz with the illumiroom with the casual media.
