It's getting quite a lot of articles and other such things on gaming websites.

Obviously this is a new phenomenon when a new console is on the horizon.

it certainly is getting much more attention than the WiiU did before they announced it

In terms of the pre-announcement period, it would be tough for the Wii U to even be a contender in generating as much hype, given it was a surprise announcement as part of Nintendo's end of year financials in April 2011...

It didn't have a big event hyped up for a few weeks.

There are plenty of other examples to point to though. I remember reading gaming magazines in the 90s, before the internet was that relevant, that had a latest roundup of rumours about the next generation in every issue. If anything the fact you had to wait a month between issues helped build up the anticipation even more. E3 seems less exciting these days for similar reasons. The instantaneous nature of everything has dulled the excitement for me somewhat compared to back then. People who've only ever known that might not feel the same way of course...

they are in a completely different situation i agree. but i just compared the two because they are the only two home consoles to be announced in a VERY long time. and i would agree about the hype thing, i was too young for me to read about magazines and stuff, but the internet does know how to kill excitment sometimes, the worst things are leaks, like when they leaked beyong two souls before E3, that pretty killed a lot of hype for sony's E3, and people started expecting even more of it
