Forums - Nintendo - Kotaku: Don’t Look Now, But The 3DS Has Become The Best Gaming Machine Out There

Not anymore, because Nintendo woke up and went back to "software sells hardware" from "hardware sells hardware". Problem is that they made the Wii U with the latter philosophy, so it has to go through an extended period of suck that will burn Nintendo's money.

By the way, Pokémon wasn't mentioned in the article to get the point across. The library is approaching a point where 10m+ sellers aren't as crucial anymore. This in turn is good news for the Wii U, because now Nintendo can focus all of their best efforts on saving that sinking ship.

I think they wanted to have software to sell hardware, but they went with the idea to allow 3rd parties to provide that initial software. Trying to remove their own IPs to avoid competition. However, 3rd parties failed Nintendo and simply didn't provide that content or at least not the content needed to push hardware.

I think it wasn´t only that, they also banked heavily on glassless 3D to sell the system, a feature that in the end most people don´t seem to care, it was like "hey that´s cool", but that was it, it wasn´t '$250 cool'.I guess that´s what Rol refers to by "hardware sells hardware" philosophy Nintendo was applying.

It says a lot when downloadable games are hailed as the best games of 2012.

I think its due to digital games taking far more risk and being truly inventive and exciting.

It is its father's son, after all...

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

This is a very good point, and one which a lot of people reached quite a long time ago. It can only get better from here.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

Why did he have to write a whole article on this? All he needed to say was, "Donkey Kong, Mario, Pokemon, Luigi, Fire Emblem..." never mind, that would take just as long...

No offense, but there's no way the 3DS library is as robust as the PS3/360 libraries right now for obvious reasons.

It doesn't even have many popular Nintendo franchises yet ... no Zelda, Metroid, Kirby, Advance Wars, F-Zero, Wave Race, etc.

I think part of the point was to say there's still a lot of potential in the machine as well. The PS3/360 have huge libraries but we're at the stage where there's not much more to happen with them beyond the next couple of months, whereas the 3DS has years worth of content to come.

Or in other words: The 3DS looks exciting, the PS3/360 are stale and have been that way for at least a couple of years already.

It says a lot when downloadable games are hailed as the best games of 2012.

Because the gaming journalists are really hipsters on the inside.

Nintendo doesn't need shitty third party games, because it indeed has third party games, it is just that most of them are japanese. Let those crappy high budgeted games out the 3DS lineup, turn your head around and tell me if the Vita is selling with those games. See, western parties do games for the purpose of money, they make money with one of those, start milking it in a YEARLY basis, and don't change anything about the game. Again no need for them. The thing is adults-wanna-be's buy all those "MATURE" games that magically grown up kids from one day to the next one on the console side, AKA fanboys that think blood makes the games cool. Thank You.

uh Japanese devs made Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Final Fantasy, Fire Emblem, Sonic, Gran Turismo, Resident Evil, Dragon Quest, MGS, Mega Man, and Castlevania all made by Japanese devs?  I think they milk their franchises just as much if not more.

mario this. lugi that. donkey kong, yoshi, kirby, and AC too. they might cover a lot of genres but the diversity in appeal is quite limited. third parties haven't really embraced the 3DS like they did the DS. the library is far from dire but if this is to be the "best gaming machine out there" it only serves to illustrate how doomed the gaming industry is.

So you don't like Nintendo IPs, and that's cool, but the marketplace disagrees that there isn't any diversity in appeal.  And saying the DS got more 3rd party support than the 3DS is just flat out wrong, specifically when you launch align them.  The DS could only dream of 3rd party support this stunning in it's first year and a half.  Hell, the DS didn't get its first AAA third party game until Final Fantasy III remake and that was 2 years after launch.

i like nintendo IP just fine, but i like a lot of other things too.  i don't see anywhere near the variety that DS had.    ..and the marketplace agrees with me.  don't get confused by 3DS winning the weekly sales charts.  the numbers show the 3DS in decline relative to the DS and the gap is growing faster each week.

again, 3DS's library is by no means dire.  but it's not something to aspire to either.

Sorry but 3DS is by far in a superior run then what the DS had, I had both at since their launches and it wasn't until the DS' 3rd year when things began to click into place for it even if we take into account games available at the time for all regions in the same time period. It's not even a case of defending the 3DS here at all it's library in the first 3 years with what's out and what's upcoming destroy the DS' library in it's first 3 years.

3DS is a good system, but the library still has a long way to go to be considered great.
