Forums - Nintendo - Kotaku: Don’t Look Now, But The 3DS Has Become The Best Gaming Machine Out There

I think they wanted to have software to sell hardware, but they went with the idea to allow 3rd parties to provide that initial software. Trying to remove their own IPs to avoid competition. However, 3rd parties failed Nintendo and simply didn't provide that content or at least not the content needed to push hardware.

You are summing up Nintendo's moronic thought process. A strategy that made them dependent on third party software.

Using an analogy, it's like a guy marrying a widely known slut and expecting her to stay loyal. It's easy to tell that that won't go over well.

But you may have a really wild honeymoon.

Any self respecting video game bloggers would not connect themselves with the likes of Pokemon kiddy games.

That's ridiculous.  Pokemon isn't any more "kiddy" than Kirby or Yoshi, and those games are mentioned by the gaming press all the time whenever new announcements are made.  He's not "connecting himself" to Pokemon by mentioning it.  The fact is, Pokemon is a huge system-seller and not mentioning it in an article that's topic is basically "3DS in 2013 is a huge year for great games" is more than a little conspicuous.

The Screamapillar is easily identified by its constant screaming—it even screams in its sleep. The Screamapillar is the favorite food of everything, is sexually attracted to fire, and needs constant reassurance or it will die.

really? i only got it for fire emblem and pokemon.

I thought that as I was writing it... a lot of things they write seem to be deliberately trollish.  How obnoxious.

meh.

mario this. lugi that. donkey kong, yoshi, kirby, and AC too. they might cover a lot of genres but the diversity in appeal is quite limited. third parties haven't really embraced the 3DS like they did the DS. the library is far from dire but if this is to be the "best gaming machine out there" it only serves to illustrate how doomed the gaming industry is.

No offense, but there's no way the 3DS library is as robust as the PS3/360 libraries right now for obvious reasons.

It doesn't even have many popular Nintendo franchises yet ... no Zelda, Metroid, Kirby, Advance Wars, F-Zero, Wave Race, etc.

I think part of the point was to say there's still a lot of potential in the machine as well. The PS3/360 have huge libraries but we're at the stage where there's not much more to happen with them beyond the next couple of months, whereas the 3DS has years worth of content to come.

Or in other words: The 3DS looks exciting, the PS3/360 are stale and have been that way for at least a couple of years already.

It says a lot when downloadable games are hailed as the best games of 2012.

Yup, although last gen going on for far too long is the cause of that. I'm still amazed that Microsoft didn't release the 720 in 2011 tbh. They're not going to see the advantage that the 360 had with a year head start for the 720. They could very well end up in last place this gen if the 720 isn't sold at a HUGE loss.

So you don't like Nintendo IPs, and that's cool, but the marketplace disagrees that there isn't any diversity in appeal.  And saying the DS got more 3rd party support than the 3DS is just flat out wrong, specifically when you launch align them.  The DS could only dream of 3rd party support this stunning in it's first year and a half.  Hell, the DS didn't get its first AAA third party game until Final Fantasy III remake and that was 2 years after launch.
