Forums - Sales - January 2013 NPD Thread - 360: 281k, Wii U: 57k, PSV: 35k

So does that mean the WiiU is doing actually worse than the VGC estimates that are already worse than my worst predictions? And when do we have more NPD figures?

WiiU Launch: 425,000 Units
January 2012: 55,000 Units

...So yeah, the WiiU ratio is abysmal. Unless Nintendo can pull a miracle, it will be the largest generational drop that Nintendo will ever suffer.

Wow, when you put it that way it looks as bad as a carnival cruise trip.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Top 50 'most fun' game list coming soon!

Tell me a funny joke!

Well I've always hoped for a unified console platform like dvd players are all unified, and multiple brand manufacturers. Perhaps if all 3 nexgen consoles do badly it will force an evolutionary leap in gaming and free everyone from the shackles of the gaming triumverate.

Gaming is going no where, but how we access games and who supplies the hardware always changes.

Viva la revolucion!

I asked this earlier, but people were posting so much and so fast that i think it went unnoticed :S

"So a recap; we have undertracked the 360 by 30k, the PS3 by 100k and overtracked the Wii and Wii U by 20k both?''

Does anyone know more about this so far?

Sounds about right, minus the Wii part.  The 360 was 281K at 44% of current gen consoles.  That leaves about 358K for PS3 and the Wii.  I would imagine we have the Wii undertracked by ~20K-40K, which would make it 100K-120K for the month.  That leaves ~238K-258K for the PS3.  So, 360 is undertracked by ~30K.  PS3 undertracked by ~90K-110K.  Both of which are up YOY.  The PS3 more so (last year, PS3 + Wii was only 281K.)

Edit: If we assume the PS3 sold 200K last year, then even with my lowest number, that would be an increase of at least 19% YOY.

Thanks for clarifying man.

I wonder why there such an increase for both the PS3 and 360 so late in the gen. What is causing this? Is it a result of the Wii U not selling well?

For the most part, the rise is due to this January being a 5 week month, instead of only 4.  I would imagine the 360 would have been down YOY if it was only 4 weeks.  The PS3 probably would have been either flat or slightly up.  I'm guessing the PS3's boost came from the white PS3 bundle that was just released, as well as many of the exclusives coming up in the next month or so.

PS3 is likely at 195,000, with Wii at 160,000 this month - up nominally year over year, but like X360 down a lot on a weekly basis (to 39,000 a week and 32,000 a week from 47,000 a week and 38,000 a week respectively last January). If you go by the weekly basis, X360 is on pace to do ~4m, and that will likely continue to drop, with Wii at ~1.5m and and PS3 at ~2.7m

No, that is impossible, I know you're always overly optimistic to Nintendo hard/software but expecting Wiis Jan NPD to be at 160k is simply ridiculous lol.

Those are some impressive X360 numbers.

Are people really surprised about WiiU's numbers, next month is going to be worse, wondering if they are going to be equally hysteric.

I don't think Nintendo should be overly worried, they are aware of the situation. They can be incompetent but the picture is crystal clear. They shouldn't rush things, they may have lost the potential to strike hard and first, but they are still selling 50k more than nextbox , and PS4 (in North America). 3DS is a good asset, and I think it's quite prudent to further establish it first than the WiiU.

All the numbers are amazingly bad. NPD had a leap January this year (normally, they have a 4-4-5 quarterly schedule * 4, this year its 5-4-5 in Q1 2013 to catch up for seven 364 day years rather than seven 365 day years).

It's 281,000 divided by five for X360, 55,000 divided by five for Wii U etc etc. So on a weekly basis X360 dropped to 56,500 from 67,500 in January 2012 to January 2013. The payroll tax will probably hurt disposable income this year too.

Please don't try to tear Xbox 360 down to Wii U - level.
The Xbox 360 is in its 8th year and does more in one week than the Wii U does in a 5-week month.

The Wii U is not starting healthy.
You should not judge Nintendo before their biggest franchises released (Mario Kart, Wii Fit U, 3D Mario, Smas Bros, Zelda). But the start is a nightmare.

The Gamecube still sold bad even after the biggest franchises released. They eventually cut the price to just $99 and lowered the royalties other publishers hade to pay for releasing software on the system just to keep it alive.

"The worst major console launch in video game history"

VGChartz

"The worst major console launch in history" probably comes from hardware and software in the 3rd Month.
