Forums - Nintendo - What would happen if Nintendo went 3rd Party?

When Sega went third party it pretty much sapped their ambition to make really cutting edge/innovative games. I'd expect something similar with Nitnendo.

But would this lead the games business as a whole to become less innovative and stale?

Other hardware manufacturers would quickly and completely capitulate to the wants and demands of EA, Activision, et al, and Nintendo's software would slowly wither and stagnate much like Sega's.

In other words, I hope you like the idea of gaming consoles being PCs controlled by thumbsticks forever, and western-style gaming in general.

First i think there no chance of that happening anytime soon. Its more probably that Sony bankrupts and exits the market... but, if it was the case, i dont know what to think.

SEGA going 3rd party didnt exactly change things for the best. So, if thats an example, nintendo would become a shell of its former self and not be as much of a big deal as it is presently.

I don't think it'll happen soon either! I'm sure we'll see Nintendo next gen as well. But I think there's a difference between Nintendo and Sega; except for Sonic I can't name another Sega IP, while Nintendo has several. Isn't it possible that Zelda sold even more if it was sold on TWO platforms?

If Nintendo went third party, developers would suffer even more so than they are today. Out of the top 50 selling games in North America, 31 are published by Nintendo - imagine them being available on all platforms (Android, PC, IOS, and so on). It would be a blood bath. It is in the best interest of the gaming industry that Nintendo games remain on one platform only.

If/when Nintendo goes third party, two things will happen

1-Some of the most known names will leave. Miyamoto would retire as has been rumored for some time and Iwata would be fired for failing in the hardware business and forcing them to quit that area. Other names could also quit but it is unsure, after all, they would still be independent and would still be making the software they want.

2-They would become one of the most influential publishers, being them the ones demanding things to whoever makes consoles or gaming devices by then. They could even launch their games on only one platform because the other(s) don't have the hardware/input devices/whatever they need to fulfill their vision, causing an impact on the hardware sales.

In other words, it would be sad for what it would mean, but also interesting because it would change the way the other publishers and hardware makers work.

Yeah, I think it would be interesting! And it would be interesting to see what kind of strings they could pull on, lets say, MS and Sony to tailor THEIR HW to Nintendo's needs.

But I think your analysis is pretty spot on.

I'm not so sure of that... With Nintendos IP's they'd have a thing or two to say about the hw. I can see how their opinion would matter MORE than either of EA or Activision, because they could decide to side with only ONE console manufactorer, giving that console an edge over the competition.

Streets of Rage is like Capcom's Final Fight but imo better.

Shining Force is kind of similar to Fire Emblem but not as well known. I should do a playthrough of the first game.

I only played SOnic and a game where you ride your motorbike, racing and trying to hit the competition with a stick...

If they went third party it would be best for most people, because if your a one console gamer your basically spending money for only nintendo games, you don't get powerful hardware or third party support. they would make games for sony and micrososft on much more powerful hardware, so you would still get the games and save cash, since you don't have to buy the hardware.

That can be just as easilt turned around on Sony and Microsoft.

If Sony went bust, the Nintendo console would be the home of the JRPG again.

I LOVE ICELAND!
