Forums - Nintendo - What would happen if Nintendo went 3rd Party?

It not going to happen. Haters can suck their... di... erm...

It would mean that MS and Sony have already gone down and that the Gaming Industry is done for.

If or when that happens it would be, because of two things. The first would be that the core audience for their own games would have significantly dwindled, and the second would be that they had suffered a financial cataclysm that would prevent them from launching new hardware. Whether people like to admit it or not these things are possible in any industry for any company. If you had told anyone ten years ago that Sony's stock would be reduced to junk status in a decades time. They might well laugh at you, and say that is totally impossible.

That said I think Nintendo wouldn't last in that market for very long. It just wouldn't have a market for its software, and if its online network is any indication. Nintendo has a hard time adapting to changes. Even when they are just plain obvious. Sometimes I feel like Nintendo is a fossil factory. If you threw them outside of their little box they would die of exposure in no time.

I only played SOnic and a game where you ride your motorbike, racing and trying to hit the competition with a stick...

It sounds a lot like Road Rash

but it's from EA, not SEGA.

Oh that's probably it! It was awesome! Ea made ONE awesome game at least :D

Other hardware manufacturers would quickly and completely capitulate to the wants and demands of EA, Activision, et al, and Nintendo's software would slowly wither and stagnate much like Sega's.

In other words, I hope you like the idea of gaming consoles being PCs controlled by thumbsticks forever, and western-style gaming in general.

I'm not so sure of that... With Nintendos IP's they'd have a thing or two to say about the hw. I can see how their opinion would matter MORE than either of EA or Activision, because they could decide to side with only ONE console manufactorer, giving that console an edge over the competition.

If Nintendo's software and IP was so crucial to the success or failure of a console, they would have no need to go third party in the first place.

True that, I just made a hypothetical qeuastion :P

While it's certainly true that anything can happen, and that Nintendo has a problem adopting new ideas that aren't their own, I don't think that their market would just vanish. I still think they could do quite well as a software company. Not ALL games needs online features, but I'm sure Nintendo could use the online capabilities made by other console manufacturers if needed.

Just look at LBP vs NSMB and it becomes very apparent that people prefers Nintendo's platformers than ANY other brands...

Without Nintendo to spice up console hardware with their whacky ideas, things wouldn't nearly be as interesting.

Worst case scenario would be going handheld only. Third party? Let them dream.

Ongoing bet with think-man: He wins if MH4 releases in any shape or form on PSV in 2013, I win if it doesn't.

Considering such big franchises they have, and all the money they make from merchandising, they still would sell millions and millions of games, just without an exclusive platform. They would survive just fine, but, of course, with a smaller staff.

If anything they would go handheld only.

If they were software, I'd expect them to go PC over another console.
