Because some of the less reasonable Nintendo fans just can't accept Nintendo not being #1. They got a rude awakening coming with not only this, but also with next gen.

The reality is that Sony fans just can't accept Nintendo not being #3. And Microsoft fans just can't accept Sony being #3. And Sony fans just can't accept Microsoft being #3. And Nintendo fans just can't accept Sony not being #3. And Microsoft fans just can't accept Nintendo being #3. That's the truth.

Desperation. Being incapable of accepting defeat?

There has been a huge case of snobbery from certain Nintendo fans during the last generation. "Nintendomination". Never forget. I remember people predicting 200 Million+ from Wii and DS.

When Wii will barely break the 100M barrier, the DS wont pass PS2 and the WiiU selling like it is... Expect to see desperation, reaching and sour grapes.

What do you mean? As I recall, PS3+PS2 shipped 15.6m combined in 2012. You either assume PS3 is vastly undertracked or you assume PS2 shipped around 3m or so of the totals.

It just feels like a desperate attempt to invent a competition. If we're going to compare these then surely we have to include tablets and smart phones too? Or is this not just an invented competition but a selective one too?

I said Sony fans AND reasonable people. Those two don't go together.

And come on, you'd have to be in complete denial to see the Wii U isn't destined for 2nd or 3rd. It's only $30-$50 more expensive than the PS3, has already had a 2D Mario (which always sells better than a 3D Mario) and even MH in Japan (while a port, MH ports still do well), yet is selling like a dying console just two months after launch. It's dropped below the PS3's worst week, which launched for $200 more and the week in question came before it was even avaiable in EU. What do you think will happen once the competition actually releases?
