Well i guess it's official, ps4 will definitely be Sonys last console (along with the Vita as their last handheld). It will sell miserably at that price point. It's been a good run, but Sony for the loss!

This is a very good price point. You have no idea what you're talking about.

For fans, sure. For the normal consumer...not so much.

PS4 is designed to peak in its 4-5th year on the market. A $400 launch price is perfectly acceptable, even to the "normal" consumer.
Keep in mind people are buying $500-$600 iPads every year. Keep in mind the $600 PS3 actually ended up being competitive despite the huge losses and much higher price point. I expect the next XBox to have the same price point so I don't see price being a problem this gen especially seeing as how the "affordable" Wii U is selling horribly. It's mostly about the games.

Compering tablets to consoles doesn't make much sense because tablets give the consumer much more value than a gaming console. You can make calls (extremely important in case of an emergency), check your email on the go, have your paper work in it (in case you have a job), watch movies and TV series, connect to the internet, etc.

In todays world having a tablet is a neccesity (for the most part), gaming consoles are not, they are just a hobby, which many people prefer to spend on other things.

I agree that what will sell the console are the games, all the power or entertainment medias won't be a selling point for most people (unless you have something similar to motion controls like the Wii).

Here is the article (the free portion, you have to register to get the rest) translated into english:

[Top] Takashi chestnut Sony Computer Entertainment is (SCE), "new stationary game machine PlayStation six days was found to be sold by the end of the year the (PS) 4 ". In the seven years since the new "PS3" in 2006, in Japan and the U.S. holiday shopping season expected to be put into. I seen a price greater than $ 40 000 but under consideration.

Event "to be held in the United States 20 days PlayStation at Meeting ", SCE president Andrew House has announced.

I found the Sony has not revealed the details, as well as the screen is high definition, and with almost the same in the form of a touch pad controller and PS3, operated finger.

-------------------------------------------------
The price itself is not even set in stone.

No, a tablet is absolutely not a necessity. It is an entertainment device, a play thing. All those things you mentioned, a console woudl be able to do. Email, TV, Movies, Internet, Calls(through Skype or something)..etc. A fun fact: most tablets are used at home and are not connected to 3G/4G as most people reserve that for their phones.

Please remember this:

Sony LOST money during the PS3 era even at the much higher price point. Sony lost money every year from 2006 up until 2010. Sony literally has been in the gaming business for FREE from PS1 to now. That's what PS3 did to them.

If Sony comes out with another grand subsidy plan, we are not looking at Nintendo by the way, who also happens to have the cash to burn if caught in a death match, Sony is fighting a battle they cannot win! Microsoft is too profitable, too cash rich, and they can match you dollar for dollar for performance and just wait until you DIE. Only company that has beaten them has been Apple via innovations. Netscape, Yahoo, remember Sun Microsystems?

If PS4 lacks any innovation and only competes on specs for this gen, we are looking at a financial disaster waiting to happen. They literally would need to spinoff Playstation as a brand to raise some cash as Sony simply doesn't have the finances in place to dig another multi-billion dollar hole. PS3 was a product disaster, I hope Sony doesn't try too hard on PS4. Pleasing cheap fans who won't pay for even the cost to produce is a strategy destined for failure in the long run.

Edit:  maybe I'm just a little too old, but news of Dell lately brought back memories of the Wang, Sun Micro, Compaq, Gateway....  MSFT made its fortunes by monopolizing the OS and just profitted from the greatest fool's gold ever created in business.  The interchangeable parts.  When hardware manufacturers were led astray by the Wintel empire, little did they know, they were all going to become extinct.  Everyone became assemblers, no longer even capable of innovations.  I feel just a tiny bit uncomfortable seeing the video game console business veering that direction.  Superchunk's chart is starting to look like a Dell, or Gateway, or Tigerdirect product comparison.  Same Manufacturers, same OEMs possibly.  Gimped PCs in a smaller box, costing more than they could sell, and costing a lot for a game to look great, taking down one game company after next.

Looking at their financial reports, the PS3 eliminated all profits from the PS2 and PS1 era. Seeing as their trajectory is going for the hardcore gamers once again for the PS4, I see no different scenario.

Instead of hardcore, let's just say mainstream console gamers.  PSbox has 60% to Nintendo's 40% (but it's really more Wii 70% during its peak, PSBox 80% now).  Going after the biggest part of the pie makes sense for Sony, especially considering Nintendo is a much stronger competitor than MSFT is at Nintendo's core market.  When it's 1 vs 1, Sony tied MSFT this gen.  But there is a huge difference in going 1 v 1 against Nintendo on handheld, because Nintendo voluntarily gives up portions of the market by limiting themselves to value engineering. So even though DS>>PSP, 3DS>Vita, Sony could make money as long as it doesn't stumble over its own toes.

Just like every living room has enough room for a PSBox And a Wii, there is room competing against Nintendo profitably.

Going against MSFT is a different story.  No one has ever won going against MSFT, not even Steve Jobs.  You can only win going away from them. MSFT wants blood.  There is no way around it.  Their culture is much less creativity, innovations, more corporate gobbling, seizing the next budding technology...but somehow choke it to death.   So unless the gaming industry can somehow come up with enough innovations that drive people towards spending, it's not looking too good at the moment.  I know this sounds like I hate MSFT, but that's just me speaking as a long term shareholder of MSFT and just watching them over the years boast of every single NEW business segment (that someone else pioneered) and just butchered everyone including themselves while at it.

You still have portability, you can't take your console outside and do all those things. Business people NEED to have a tablet because they keep their work on there, have to check their email constantly and receive important calls. If you want you can also include gaming in there, a normal consumer won't have the need to pay a $400 console because all their "gaming needs" will be satisfied with the Angry Birds and the likes (unless, again, you have something revolutionary like the Wii). There are also some pretty cheap tablets like the Kindle Fire that offer all of those things (minus making calls), for something that it's waaaay cheaper than this rumored price.

As a gamer it obviously "pains" me to see people paying $500+ on tablets, but the reality is that most people do not see the value of gaming consoles when they are expensive. $400 is not a good price for short term success imo. Long term success is a different story, but this could be a double edge sword.

Consoles are usually more expensive in Japan, if that RUMOR is true then 400$-450$. Not bad at all.

You only have portability if you paid for some kind of 4G connection, most don't. I see your point that many people are content playing Angry Birds on their tablets or phones, but there are many that aren't as well. PS4 aims for long-term success, not short term. A $400 price point is pretty good for something that you'll be playing for more than 5 years. Look at PS3 back in 2006 and now in 2013. They are completely different consoles in terms of functionality. I agree that $400 is not affordable, but it is not overpriced either, not for the type of technolog you're getting. It's rumored to be 6-8x the power of Wii U, but only about an additional $100. I say that is amazing!

So, chances are that the PS4 wont blow the Wii U out of the water unless Sony is taking big losses.

According to Nikkei report, the Cell chip (PS3) will not be included for PS4 - http://gematsu.com/2013/02/nikkei-ps4-to-utilize-gaikai-have-expanded-social-features

PS4 will not be backwards compatible. This leads me to believe that the PS3 library will only be available via streaming on Gakai for PS + members.

First the WiiU has to blow the PS3 out of the water. So far the system games look worst than their Xbox360 - PS3 counterparts...
