Forums - Sony - Japanese newspaper claims PS4 will cost over 40,000 yen, releasing this year

If the PS4 doesnt launch at a cost close to wiiU price it will be in big trouble.. PS3 will continue to outsell it.. see vita/psp example.

How is $399 not close to the Premuim Wii U (which supposedly is the model that sells the most) price of $349?  And considering there is going to be a big gap in graphics between the two, that $50 extra is going to be deemed worth it.  Also, the PS2 continued to outsell the PS3 for the first couple of years, yet the PS3 is doing pretty good, now.  And if a $499-$599 PS3 can go on to sell 72M+ (probably will end up around 90M+), then I think a $399-$449 PS4 is going to be fine.  I think Nintendo is really the one in trouble for next gen.  Their system has a year headstart, and its entry price is a minimum $100 less than the PS4/NeXbox, yet it has started selling like a dead console.

Premium my ass, that 32GB HD is not even close of being enough in this digital era. Also, Nintendo Land... No thanks.

Well i guess it's official, ps4 will definitely be Sonys last console (along with the Vita as their last handheld). It will sell miserably at that price point. It's been a good run, but Sony for the loss!

This is a very good price point. You have no idea what you're talking about.

For fans, sure. For the normal consumer...not so much.

PS4 is designed to peak in its 4-5th year on the market. A $400 launch price is perfectly acceptable, even to the "normal" consumer.
Keep in mind people are buying $500-$600 iPads every year. Keep in mind the $600 PS3 actually ended up being competitive despite the huge losses and much higher price point. I expect the next XBox to have the same price point so I don't see price being a problem this gen especially seeing as how the "affordable" Wii U is selling horribly. It's mostly about the games.

Compering tablets to consoles doesn't make much sense because tablets give the consumer much more value than a gaming console. You can make calls (extremely important in case of an emergency), check your email on the go, have your paper work in it (in case you have a job), watch movies and TV series, connect to the internet, etc.

In todays world having a tablet is a neccesity (for the most part), gaming consoles are not, they are just a hobby, which many people prefer to spend on other things.

I agree that what will sell the console are the games, all the power or entertainment medias won't be a selling point for most people (unless you have something similar to motion controls like the Wii).

No, a tablet is absolutely not a necessity. It is an entertainment device, a play thing. All those things you mentioned, a console woudl be able to do. Email, TV, Movies, Internet, Calls(through Skype or something)..etc. A fun fact: most tablets are used at home and are not connected to 3G/4G as most people reserve that for their phones.

Nobody emails on their console.  Nobody will EVER email on their console, that's stupidly absurd when it can be done 100x easier on a tablet and even more so on a real computer.

Also, tablets are getting big in enterprise, lots of IT departments are pretty much doing BYOD or issuing company tablets.

Well considering the PS3 launched at around 58000 Yen, 40k doesn't sound so bad especially when factoring in inflation.

There's no inflation in Japan, prices have remained steady for about three decades, plus it's over 40.000. Should be better overseas though.

Still, if they go for $/€450 I think it's expensive, even though everyone remembers the infamous $599 tag, people forget that there was also a $499 model from the beginning, this would only be $50 cheaper.

A country without inflation, what a dream. Here in Brazil it is about 10-15% a year, but the government says it is 6%, so sallary never keeps up. It´s pretty hard...

people are seriously taking an estimate posted in a newspaper as fact? before the console has even been revealed? what next, gamestop estimated prices being used as fact too?

I'm no expert in economics, but having no inflation has its downsides.  The value of debt never goes down, and the economy has a harder time growing. Actually, the new Japanese government wants to achieve an inflation of 2% from now.

If you think 10% is bad, look at Zimbabwe! ;p

I have a feeling it's going to be at the comfortable price of $399.99..with a price drop within the 2nd year

Sidenote: is it just me or is VGChartz starting to regain some of its old feel in the community? Like it feels more lively now then it has in years

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi
