Pretty shoddy article from the usually reliable Edge.

Agreed. This seems so wrong people! Online always? No used games? Yeah, doubt it.

Now they have another article, lots of people on gaf are worried because it seems Edge are really confident in the sources.

They´re usually very reliable, so either they lose a lot of credibility or there´s truth to this story, as surreal as it sounds.

I certainly hope not. :/

CGI, here´s the other article I just told you about

http://www.edge-online.com/features/risky-business-the-next-xbox-versus-playstation-4/

You’ve got to admire Microsoft’s bravery. News that its next Xbox could shut out the second-hand games market has caused strong reactions across social media today, and it has impacted upon the real world too. GameStop’s share price took a dent following the publication of our story earlier this afternoon.

If our sources are correct (and we’re confident they are), Microsoft has made the move that publishers and developers have been asking for. Microsoft’s next Xbox will do what Steam and the App Store have been doing for years, and very successfully, too – a download-first, one profile, one purchase, one storefront system. Overnight, it’ll stop GameStop and GAME from selling on games without a penny heading back to its publisher, let alone its creator.

Microsoft has also, rather more sensibly, surmised that the kind of consumer happy to pay for a next-generation console is going to have a decent internet connection. It is not a portable device; there’s little harm in keeping the next Xbox connected, as long as the next iteration of Xbox Live is implemented in the right way. Past experiences with always-on services have been disappointing – just ask Ubisoft and Blizzard – but that’s current generation technology. Microsoft must take note of its contemporaries’ mistakes and make its always-on Xbox service as unobtrusive as it can.

lol always online and anti-used?
Sure fire way to get people to NOT buy your console, coming from a MS fanboy (me)

It's just that simple.

Well rumors from both camps have been saying no used games now....

doesn't really bother me if I have a cd key or something to activate, but if I have to always be connnected to the internet... thats just bad. My internet goes out all the freaking time. If I get kicked out of a game because my internet burps for a second...

"Microsoft’s next console will require an Internet connection in order to function"

Making it the first console I would be unable to play. This really makes zero sense and would kill it in rural markets (which is significant in North America).

Not going to happen man. They are going to take a hit in developing countries. The market their expanding more than in the west. They'll do it if they want to be irrelevant to large growing segment of potential gamers. The internet part i mean and same with used games. I really think we are atleast one generation away from that.

i doubt they would force it to be online as not everyone has internet.

Looks to me like many people in this thread have very selective thinking...

Heard of smartphones and especially Iphones ?

They doing pretty well right ?
Yet not every rural community or developed country has good wireless signal, even less good 3G or 4G networks........

You do not need to target 100% of the market to be successfull..........

Yet most of the people in this thread have been arguing that fundamentally Apple's business model is wrong.

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

I'm not sure how to respond to this. On one hand, this could very well be the work of a troll. It IS edge magazine, after all, and they could just be going for "how many fanboys can we rile up? with assertions of always on DRM, focus on Kinect, and blocked used game sales". could be a satire!

but on the flipside, after reading that article on how PS+ is embarrassing Xbox Live, being reminded that Microsoft isn't above putting features behind a wall that other consoles offer free of charge, I wouldn't be surprised if this was true at all.

Either way, my mentality stays: If either console has "always on DRM" or in any way blocks used game sales (blocks, not the online passes deal we have now, which is still BS but manageable), No console for me. I am eagerly looking forward to next gen, and have already started putting pennies away for the nextbox and PS4, but if either of them pulls a fast one in the form of intrusive, obstructing DRM, I can't be bothered to support them. I love my hobby, but there are literally thousands of games I could go back and play before I need to get a new system. Not to mention I could sustain myself on my backlog for years.

And there's Steam. I love you, Valve!
