Forums - Gaming - MCV: "Devil May Cry fans to blame for DmC sales disappointment"

I think we can all agree that this game is a total failure for the company, remember that...

“The reason is that, despite the franchise has some very loyal followers, their sales are not particularly high, especially overseas.” He went on: “For this reason, it is likely that in the fifth chapter will incorporate certain western touch to make it more attractive to American and European players.”

So even if it is a great game, the reason why it was changed (attract more sales) was not achieved, it did not brought enough new gamers to justify it and it did alienate the "loyal fans". So it was a loss-loss for Capcom.

Looking at this game and their approach with Resident Evil 6: "Looking at the marketing data [for survival horror games] … the market is small, compared to the number of units Call of Duty and all those action games sell. A ‘survival horror’ Resident Evil doesn’t seem like it’d be able to sell those kind of numbers"

Maybe they will learn faster that you can change and tweak the formula (RE3 vs RE4), but a few thing have to remain to keep the soul and flavor of the game, because it is one of the reason the fans liked in the first place.

You can't blame it on people. I PERSONALLY believe a good bunch of the DMC fans are being a bunch of little girls about the whole thing by boycotting it and spreading hate without trying it BUT you can't force them to like it. The game didn't sell well because it failed to appease the older fan base and it didn't appeal to a new crowd of gamers.

"Trick shot? The trick is NOT to get shot." - Lucian

It's an enjoyable game, it's just not a good DMC entry is all. I believe it should have been a new IP because outside of the mission structure and the look of devil trigger, it doesn't bear that much resemblance with DMC. You could easily change some names around like Vergil and Sparda as well as the look of Rebellion and no one would even compare it to DMC other than it being an action game.

I can't comment on the quality of the game itself, but the kind of fanboys who are so deathly afraid of change that they throw a hissy fit over the colour of a character's hair.. seriously guys? Seriously?

Many great games came about by companies dropping comfortable old conventions, and many bad games were made as a result of companies trying too hard to please closed minded, conservative fans.

They cant just bring back Kamiya after he left them for Platinum Games. Bayonetta has great gameplay but sucks everywhere else from camera to, presentation, story character balance and more. Gameplay is Kamiyas nitch and thats it.

Bayonetta doesn't suck in presentation, the graphics and music are awesome. But at any rate, I'd say 80% of a game's value is gameplay, so that's the important part.

So, I got curious about something. Why do DmC supporters talk about the hair more than the haters have ever talked about it?

I've never seen supporters defend the game with anything other than "You only hate it because of the hair". At least the haters criticize everything else in the game that needs criticism.

Because the hair thing is so ridiculus it leaves you amazed that people would avoid the game because of it. Of course people are going to talk about the hair, it made alot of people act absurd. DmC is currently a target for people in gaming. The target changes from time to time. Sony, Nintendo, Mass Effect 3. When a company does something the people disagree with they attack it but when a loved company makes a game that has FAR FAR more problems then the game being critized they get ignored coughcoughskyrimcough.

So pretty much because Dante has white hair people are looking deeply into what problems the game does have and making a huge deal out of it, but if they loved Capcom these problems would be glanced over like they were nothing. There is a word to descirbe the community for ripping a game apart that has problems but not ripping another game apart that has 20x more. I can't remember what it is but I think it starts with an H.

That's wrong. I see Skyrim getting ripped apart a lot of times. It's just that no gaming "journalists" makes a huge deal out of it. DMC fans might hate Skyrim too, but who makes a huge deal out of it? Nobody. That's why people never hear anything about Skyrim getting ripped apart.

Skyrim did recieve some attacks from some of the communities, but the overall love and praise (and sales) far outweighted them to the point where saying it was okay to ignore massive problems was fine. Attacking a game that isnt even out yet because they changed the hair color of a main character is insane. Maybe they are attacking the fans because they are mad about the sales, but alot of people are equally ignorant.

I guess what I am saying is because Skyrim was allowed to pass being masively broken, unless you attacked it to a higher degree then any other game, no one really has a right to point out any other games problems. This is like the Mass Effect 3 thing all over again, people disagree with some decisions (a fucking artistic discision at that the game wasnt even broken) they get their panties in a bunch and ruin good games.

You better believe if Dante had white hair this game wouldn't be getting attacked as much.

I'm just going to copy/paste a response I made in a similar thread, as it works perfect for your baseless comment.

I also find it ridiculous that all of the DmC supporters really have nothing to attack the DMC fans with except Dante's hair color.  It just shows you really have no argument against them, and therefore must make the original fans out to be shallow gamers.  As if NT could have still turned Dante into a scrawny emo (who's personality we hate), and made all those poor changes to the combat and controls, and we would have eaten it up as long as his hair was white.  Also, to imply that no one gave the game a chance?  It had a demo on Live and PSN, which is where ALL the complaints about gameplay/control and difficulty came from.  AFTER people played the demo.  DMC fans did give it a chance, didn't like it, so therefore voted with their wallets.  And there most likely won't be a DmC sequel becuse of it.  You just need to accept it and move on, without bashing those fans.

That comment doesn't really address mine as I am clearly referring to the hair colour whiners, not everyone who disliked the game. I also never implied that nobody gave the game a chance.

That is a sensationalist article. This is a sales site. I encourage users to check the numbers:

DMC4 week 1/2 sales: http://www.vgchartz.com/weekly/39481/Global/

DmC week 1 sales: http://www.vgchartz.com/weekly/41294/Global/

Year on year sales are down. This game is coming in at the end of the console cycle.

And DMC4 had much weaker competition.

Capcom made those sales predictions last year assuming the game would enter the market in the same conditions as DMC4.

The point is its just a bad time to release a new IP or a reboot. DmC has actually done pretty well in my opinion. What Capcom need to do now is release a special edition of the game next year in the same conditions DMC4 entered the market. Because this game isn't about DMC fans buying the game, its about getting new players to do that. New players WILL NOT buy this game at this point in the console cycle.

Personally I think the sales are good, not great, not bad, but good!

Forecast lowered from 5M to 2M, then from 2M to 1.2M

Yea I'm sure Capcom is very happy with this good numbers, but keep spining it I enjoy all the delicious tears.
