Forums - Sales - Square-Enix financials: ¥5.7b loss amid ‘increasingly difficult’ console market

So many people are missing the point.

S-E isn't in trouble, because they don't make games that their fans want. When their supposed Final Fantasy XIII atrocities move millions of copies, you have a hard time saying that their games aren't selling anymore.

S-E is in trouble due to basic economics. If your sales numbers remain flat, but your development costs multiply, you will of course run into problems eventually. Making games that their fans want (who can hardly agree on anything anyway) won't solve this problem.

Pretty much every publisher is going to face this same problem sooner or later.

It's true.  This is espeically the case with JRPGs that are supposed to be 4-8X larger then your average game.  Which means you need a LOT more art assets.

It's not like the old days where you can just pallete swap all your monsters and use the same 10 2D background tiles for everything.

The company is still banking on big sales of Tomb Raider.

Deary me.  Eidos has pretty much kept them afloat in the console space these past year or so, but I really don't think they should put too much faith in this one.

FF XIV.  I feel that's the big elephant in the room, still.  Why they're trying to salvage that project, especially for PS3, is beyond me.  I get that XI has been a money printing machine for them but I feel like that boat has really sailed for XIV.  If it were a launch title for next gen then maybe, maybe it could get itself off the ground.

Personally, I'm not too fussed about them milking the XIII IP.  Must make financial sense for them, since they can re-use so many art assets and still sell a decent amount.  It's just the little things like not bringing over Type-0 and Bravely Default that bother me at the moment.  Those games would surely recoup their localisation fees and then some, but Squeenix just seem insistant on not bothering.  Ugh.

Dragon Quest MMO subscriptions and Final Fantasy Reborn MMO subscriptions will help that bottom line. A lot.

It's just that simple.

You know what I'm talking about.
You went multiplat. You compromised the game content, and could have sold just as much on one console.

Anotger game s-e has no idea people would play.
Triple triad.

You are making all the wrong decisions.
We demanded versus. no versus.
we demanded ffx hd. no ffx hd.
instead, you continue to chew away your integrity by teasing announvements for ios games.

sudoku. public sudoku.

Sony has enough money to buy SE ten times over. Literally.

Yeah. I don't know why there are all these naysayers. Sony could sell a few buildings here and there and buy anything they wanted.

Plus, their TV profits are just going to waste if they only put them in the bank when their gaming department could make use of.

Personally I think they should take all the money (they don't have to go on spending) and throw it into gaming, that is a wise decision right?

furthermore, we expect that you will put off versus until ps4.
You're just going to be making the same mistake that you did with 13. Release the game for ps3 and stop fucking with it. Stop thinking you can increase the marketshare for ff by putting it on stronger multiple consoles. It only needs to be on one, and that is ps3. It doesn't matter if ps4 is released, people will still have their ps3s.

Wow, I really respect this post a lot, it is has been awhile I can say that about anyone on this website! :P

(Given I think SE is still stupid as hell, in they way they handled FF Agito.)

And it will only get harder for them in the next gen. Sony should consider raising its stake in SE to 51% in a few years.

Good idea. Tell them to sell their remaining buildings for it. They can work under tents.

More FF games on IOS will do the trick

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

The non-launch of FF Type 0 in the west is the true mistery about this company...
