Official sales figures = number of units shipped = number of units "sold" to retailers, hence earnings counted for Nintendo. This isn't the same as the number of units sold to end consumers. There will always be copies sitting in reseller shelves and warehouses. All companies do this because A. it looks better and B. they don't want to waste the resources asking and counting actual sales and discounting returns from tens of thousands of retailers worldwide.

explain why mario has sold 5.3m here, with 5.9m shipped, while pokemon 'which isn't bundled like mario' managed to have twice the shelf space?

First, I'm not saying the numbers here are perfectly accurate, but they are pretty well educated estimates.
Second, it's not just shelf space, it's warehouse space as well, in tens of thousands of retailers of various sizes worldwide.
Third, it's Pokemon, so of course there would be larger expectations for sales and thus retailers order more copies.

Wow! Over 7.5 already? For a remake of a game that is really great! Did someone say pokemon went a generation too far?

They're not remakes, they're sequels! :(

I'm not really sure how to find it so can you show a source that confirms that the official sales figures are shipped units?

You have to remember that Mario is a bigger franchise
