I think the Wii U proved more than anything else that Mario alone is not enough to move consoles, and that Nintendo management really has no idea what they are doing anymore.

I wouldn't really say that.  3,000,000 units sold in the time the Wii U has been out isn't that bad, it's just nowhere near what they expected (or what others expected).  It is also CURRENTLY not having much going for it as no games are being released (at least, no big ones).

It's actually under 2 million sold. 3 million would be what they shipped, which is probably going to be sitting on store shelves for a while.

No its not. Please don't post something that is not factual.

By the end of Q3, according to Nintendo's Financial report, the Wii U sold 430k in EUR, 890k in US, and 627k in Japan. Which brings a total of 1.94 million. Add Australia, Canada, Mexico and Latin America, which was not shared by Nintendo, the result is more than ''under 2 million sold.''

Good day.

Canada, Australia, and Latin America are tiny markets. Those are very poor sales, reminscent of the GameCube. They are probably over 2 million but not by much through Christmas, without supply constraints.

Demand for the system is extremely soft, there's no way to spin it. Those Euro sales in particular are horrid, they couldn't even sell half their inventory through Christmas even with a new Mario game.

It's not probably, they ARE over two million. Why always undermine Nintendo's achievements?

Xbox 360 was supply constrained in the begining, and yet sold less than 6 million units WW in the long run during its 1st year on the market (less than Gamecubes' offering). Wii U will most likely outperform Xbox 360's first year on the market but will not have been supply constrained, does that mean it's a flop?

XBox 360 was a system built for 6-7 lifecycle because it's chipset was ahead of the tech curve (so much so that MS had tons of overheating/RROD problems with it).

The Wii U is not.

The XBox 360 was the successor the moderately successful XBox as well, the Wii U is the successor to the Wii, which is one of most successful consoles ever, little bit of a difference there. MS was still building the XBox brand in the early years of the 360.

It isn't fair to say until the year head-start is over. Make the thread in January 2014 after holiday sales have all been reported.

I never said they missed an opportunity

Wouldn't be surprised if its overtracked by 200k or more. They barely got to over 2 million by the end of 2012, by Nintendo's own numbers, no chance in puppy heaven have they sold an additional 500,000 in January.

Why would you even think that? They sold the majority of the Wii U in 2012.

And still, 200k less wouldn't be under 2 Million, like you said before.

They did sell under 2 million in the three major markets through holiday 2012. That's a fact by Nintendo's own numbers that's what I was referring to, as another poster was trying to say they sold 3 million, which is not true. Shipped does not equal sold.

This is something Ive been thinking about lately.   As most of you know I wasn't thrilled with the Launch games for the Wii U but have loved the stuff they announced at Nintendo Direct recently.  It looks to me like Nintendo is really ramping up their efforts and are building some great software.

But is this all a little too late?  Did Nintendo miss a huge opportunity to really drive a large install base early against the next gen systems?   I cant help but think Ninty shouldve had more large scale software available or announced for the early days of the system.  As we know the Playstation 4 is due to be announced this month and the next Xbox very soon after that.  It seems like there's a very real chance the announcement s could steal some thunder the Wii U was starting to gain.

This is NOT a Wii U doom thread but do you feel Nintendo could've done a better job of building a strong opening library and user base to give the a huge jump start on Sony / ME

As a huge nintendo Fan, im disapointed! Why? Cuz of it not going to be powerful as PS4/X720? Course Not! Cuz of damn Software! They could put pikmin 3 a Feb release! They should of made a game or two ready by May/June! Its the software! Unless they plan on countering PS4/X720 by bringing SSB4, MKU, and SMG3 at there launch dates!? Anyway Just wish Nintendo did a better Jobwith Software.

To me the disappointing things is that the console has no real buzz about it and the majority of people I talk to don't understand its a new console. The PR has been woeful as they should be building a clear identity for the Wii U to set it apart from competitors. These can be fixed this year of course but so far its been a waste of a head start IMO.

I'm done. I'm losing my time and patience with you. You are clearly shortsighted regardless of the arguments, and supported facts I bring forth.

Judging by your comment, based on Sony's PS2 success and brand recognition, compared to Nintendo and Gamecube, one would of predicted that the PS3 would be the market leader this generation, and Nintendo a distant third - not the case as of late.

Best Regards

In the short term it will appear so, however, unless Nintendo seriously drops the ball, their advantage will be apparent heading into this holiday. They'll possibly have a price drop, have a wave of 2nd-generation software against the competition's first-generation software. Imagine Wii's holiday 2007 lineup clashing toe-to-toe with 360's holiday 2005 or PS3's holiday 2006

Granted, it's highly possible that Sony and Microsoft will aggressively run a better class of launch title, which will complicate the question

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

I believe Sony will be ready this gen unlike last and Nintendo haven't prepared for that. My guess would be to do a dirty move like they did with the Vita and when the PS4 launches price cut massively the WiiU.

Yes. As a matter of fact WiiU came out a year too late.

The first system sellers will start to come in over 8-9 months, the big games like Mario Kart and a 3D Mario game were listed as TBA on the leaked release list so probably they don't even launch this year.

They haven't missed an opportunity, there are still some 10 months before Sony and Microsoft's consoles launch.

Nintendo will have sold over 5 million consoles by the time their 8th-gen competitors are released, and will have much stronger momentum than some just-released product. Sony and Microsoft will spend at least the next few years chasing Nintendo's lead.
