They haven't missed an opportunity, there are still some 10 months before Sony and Microsoft's consoles launch.
Nintendo will have sold over 5 million consoles by the time their 8th-gen competitors are released, and will have much stronger momentum than some just-released product. Sony and Microsoft will spend at least the next few years chasing Nintendo's lead.
