Forums - Gaming - Playstation 4 will fail sales wise. Here is why...

If anything, sales show the market does NOT reward innovation.

true that's probably why Wii and DS sold so well -_-

I think the PS4 will do just fine regardless of its controller or it price - if you consider the PS3. Sony has a lot of support in gaming from being the 'standard' for at least two gaming generations. So while PS4 might struggle like PS3 did out the blocks, it also certainly wouldn't fail, as PS3 didn't later on in the race.

I love My Wii U, and the potential it brings to gaming.

Aren't Wii U sales higher than the PS3 and 360 within the same timeframe from their launch?

I don't think any next gen consoles will sell as much as this gen. I think higher price points, lack of real innovation, and more inexpensive video game options elsewhere will cut demand for next gen consoles.

I do still think the Wii U will still sell the most because it has shown, as far as I know at this point in time, to be the innovative and shows differentiation.

Dont' know the exact numbers but it is in that range. The thing is that PS3/360 didn't exactly sell well in their early years. PS3/360 peaked in their like 6th/7th year. Nintendo consoles peak in about their 3rd. Wii U isn't off to a good start and it's going to peak in about 2015 with mediocre sales with no 3rd party support to keep it selling on the back-half of the generation.

Not broke, don't fix, ect.

Dual shock is the best controller- has been and always will be. It just needs minor adjustments gen to gen. In this case better triggers and a vita style d-pad (it already has the best dpad on the market but the vita took it to a new level).

Dualshock could use some better ergonomics. It looks too old-school. They need to make it look new and futuristic, modern.

I think the exact opposite.

Yeah, apparently the Wii U is not what the mass market wants. And the PS4 and xbox 720 will be no different, none of them will reel in the casuals this gen. Its a nice sentiment though, if you assume that the Wii U is going to win that must mean that the next PS and xbox will move less than 45-50 million each at the most, that's a drastic drop from the 7th generation hardware sales.

Also, OP, shouldn't you be creating hit & run religious threads?

So hardcores won't take a console beyond 45-50 million?  So the PS2 sold 100 million based on DVD player capability?  PSone sold 50 million due to being able to play CDs?

Where did you get that notion in my post? I'm questioning the "logic" in the OP and pointing out how unlikely his scenario is, if he assumes that the Wii U will "win" the 8th generation with the likely lifetime numbers its headed for that must mean he implies sales in the region below 45-50 million for both PS4 and xbox 720, not my idea, his idea for a likely resolution of the 8th generation.

My take? None of the three consoles will sell as much in the 8th generation, mostly due to the hardware cycle itself being shorter and somewhat due to new competition in a fast paced market (Valve and Apple likely setting their sights on living room boxes). The continued effort and dedication to making home consoles more into media centers makes the Apple and Valve competition all the more relevant and PC's will also be more competitive since they easily have best multimedia capability and compatability as well as gross hardware advantages on top.

Sony and MS are purposefully making media playback and streaming and non gaming functions into selling points, ironically leading to the possible scenario that you faultily assumed I was implying was the case with the PS1 and PS2's cycles and sales appeal.

It looks like the Playstation 4 will use the same boring controller of 18+ years but with a touchpad (which I think is useless for the most part). I have said it before and I will say it again that the console with the novel controller which enables novel gameplay ideas will win the new gen. That's what the mass market wants. That's why I think Wii U will win sales wise. That leaves Microsoft with possibly bringing out something innovative but I doubt it because I don't think they are creative.

I agree this will limit PS4's appeal with the mass market.  We will have to see how they position Move next gen though.

I disagree completely the WiiU is what casuals want.  It is the anti-thesis of the Wii.  The wiimote was simple elegance of design. You move it, your character moves accordingly.  A couple big buttons.  Easy.  Anyone 'got' in in seconds.    The gamepad is a disaster of buttons, sticks, triggers, motion controls, touch screen.   It's big, it's bulky and it's totally unappealling to anyone. Core or casual.   The casual crowd will avoid it completely.  And there in absolutely nothing innovative about a touch screen in 2013.  I have six touch screen devices in my home already.  It's just standard fare now.  That's why Sony is including it.

Durango/720 with Kinect 2/smart glass/and other rumoured goodies is the console sector's best bet at capturing casuals.   IF MS plays their cards right they will easily win next gen.   If they don't, then casuals will be with Apple and Android and the console market will strink considerably.

The Wii-mote is intuitive, simple, effective and, put simply, brilliant. And I'm not even a fan of the thing (rather, I'm not fan of the wasted potential it held and the lack of proper implementation of its full capacity). The gamepad is none of the above.

the social media features mentioned in the rumours alone sound more innovative and useful than anything i've seen so far for the wii u imo
i really do hope at least those parts are accurate

youtubers will never have to buy seperate devices again and you can easily share any cool things you've done in games with your friends

it sounds awesome and i'm sure it'd end up being a feature that's used a lot
