It looks like the Playstation 4 will use the same boring controller of 18+ years but with a touchpad (which I think is useless for the most part). I have said it before and I will say it again that the console with the novel controller which enables novel gameplay ideas will win the new gen. That's what the mass market wants. That's why I think Wii U will win sales wise. That leaves Microsoft with possibly bringing out something innovative but I doubt it because I don't think they are creative.

I agree this will limit PS4's appeal with the mass market.  We will have to see how they position Move next gen though.

I disagree completely the WiiU is what casuals want.  It is the anti-thesis of the Wii.  The wiimote was simple elegance of design. You move it, your character moves accordingly.  A couple big buttons.  Easy.  Anyone 'got' in in seconds.    The gamepad is a disaster of buttons, sticks, triggers, motion controls, touch screen.   It's big, it's bulky and it's totally unappealling to anyone. Core or casual.   The casual crowd will avoid it completely.  And there in absolutely nothing innovative about a touch screen in 2013.  I have six touch screen devices in my home already.  It's just standard fare now.  That's why Sony is including it.

Durango/720 with Kinect 2/smart glass/and other rumoured goodies is the console sector's best bet at capturing casuals.   IF MS plays their cards right they will easily win next gen.   If they don't, then casuals will be with Apple and Android and the console market will strink considerably.
