Forums - Politics - Should we be able to just buy prescriptions over the counter instead of having to go to a Doctor?

It's controlled because somebody will sue when out of their own stupidity they take something they decided on without consulting a doctor. Heck they'd sue even if they took it for recreation. Someone is injured or dies, somebody gets sued.

Not sure that could happen. Can people who deliberately or inadvertantly abuse drugs sue for damages? I thought it could only happen if you took it as directed and got negative side-effects.

They can sue. They just won't win.*

People in Mexico buy a lot of drugs over the counter, antibiotics included.

I've yet to hear about any super bugs coming out of Mexico.

The fact is most people are responsible with drugs. But some people are just too damn concerned with idiots.

First of all, this is part of a problem with private healthcare. The fact that it costs money just to get advice from a doctor is just crazy. It wouldn't be like that if you had some public healthcare in the US, since doctors are paid for by taxpayers money this way. Even stuff like prescriptions are subsidised usually, as it is in the UK.

But if people know already what they need to get better, they should just be able to get it from the pharmacists. I agree there.

One problem I have is with antibiotics requiring doctor screening. If you have an infection you shouldn't have to have someone look at it when you know what it is.

For that reason, I think pharmacies should have a kind of middle doctor diagnosis officer who can say, "yep, this person has a throat infection, this person has bronchial infection" and issue antibiotics prescriptions.

This.

We need harder access to antibiotics, not easier access. For example Gonorrhea is now nearly completely immune to current

anitbiotics due to overuse for treatment. There is only one type left that it can be treated with and it's already showing

signs of immunity to that.

Stupid health system of yours. Going to see the doctor shouldn't cost you any money. Immunizations also shouldn't. But buying regulated medicine without the approval of a doctor? No sir.

No, not at all, medicine consumption needs to go down. The people spend on doctors for prescriptions would go towards even more medicine.
