Forums - Gaming - Sony breaking cover first: beneficial or detrimental?

Is Sony releasing details about its next-gen console before MS a good thing or a bad thing for them?

Positives:

- They'll have a huge amount of hype as they're the first to announce it and the media has gone/will go crazy...so it's alot of free promo basically

Negatives:

- Even though they won't release a specific price, MS will have a rough idea of the price it'll be from the specs so they can try and undercut it

- MS will know the specs and so they may try to outdo them, and it'll be too late for Sony to retaliate

Overall I think it's bad to break cover first, but they way in which Sony has done it is very clever so I'm not too sure whether it'll be a good or bad thing in the long-run. Time will tell I guess...

Thoughts?

Someone had to break cover. Or we'll have things going on in a spiral. Atleast now Sony would strive to show how they will outdo Nintendo rather than MS. That's the positive thing. Well competition can swing back and forth. So yeah, talking about how detrimental this can be is pretty daring at this point.

I would think probably a good thing. They look like they will be quite similar consoles, with Microsoft having Kinect 2.0 and Sony having Gaikai. By going first, Sony can get the benefit of being the first to impress with next-gen graphics, relying mostly on that for the impact. If Microsoft had showed off next-gen graphics + Kinect first, Sony might look like a watered down experience when shown afterwards.

Gaikai sounds great, but if a lot harder to demonstrate. It's like the difference between demonstrating the appeal of Wii vs Wii U. Wii U has more, but it's harder to convey to the average person. Sony needs people talking about this console without always simultaneously comparing it to the next Xbox.

imo, it would be too late for MS to try and change the specs significantly if they plan on releasing it within the same timeframe. I think they will try to go for a cheaper price though if they can reasonably do so.

Do you really think MS has time to create brand new specs? This stuff doesn't happen overnight. Sure they can create a better console but have fun releasing 2 years after the PS4.

Why does Sony have to reveal their specs? All they have to do is reveal it and show a tech demo or two.

Too late for Microsoft to change the specs even if Sony gives them a blueprint of the ps4 they can't do nothing to outdo them in a year.

I think it's neutral. Not good or bad to go first.
