Forums - Gaming - Rumour - Microsoft insider responds to Playstation meeting; CVG sources "confirm" PS4 reveal

There is so much that desperately needs to be addressed in this thread. Firstly it isn't subjective at all. Early in the previous generation Sony's public relations came off more arrogant, and it was indeed more arrogant. It wasn't a matter of those in positions to comment overselling their product. They resorted to obvious fabrications. Let me reiterate they told a lot of big fucking lies to the media and consumers, and while it was fair to hold them accountable, and mock them for what they said. I for one understand why they felt like they needed to tell those lies, and make those terribly absurd comments.

Fundamentally bluff and bullshit was all they had to wage a war against overwhelming odds. They had to do something to sell their product even when all of the facts were stacked solidly against them. I know some memories are foggy here, but anyone not conceding to the boondoggle that was the first six months of the PS3s launch is at best fooling themselves, and at worst is just being painfully dishonest. The console was overpriced, under supported, extremely lacking in games, under assault from the media, the public, and the industry itself. If all that negative stigma wasn't enough the vindication of the naysayers being born out by the early abhorrent sales was like blood in the water.

Look I am not saying what they did was good or acceptable, and as a point of fact it probably didn't do them, or the company any favors. They were desperate to create a positive narrative, and desperate people say and do desperate things that they wouldn't ordinarily do. Sony lost a lot of credibility due to their poor public relations, and they really got nothing for what was a fools bargain. In the end it wasn't the outlandish commentary that brought the platform back from the brink. That was just the product of a unwillingness to abandon their product no matter the cost. We have debated whether that was sound, or even rational countless times, and we will probably debate that over and over again moving forward.

Yes the public relations back then was a pretty damn insulting. I suppose the question is whether Sony learned from the whole fiasco, and personally I think they have made some pretty serious progress. I doubt they would be a player in this market today if they hadn't. If that narcissistic self indulgent chest thumping had gone on throughout the whole of this past generation I doubt more then a figurative handful would have stuck with them. Consumers don't stick with companies that they don't feel respect them, and there is nothing more disrespectful then a company that thinks it can just lie day in and day out.

I don't think it is anything like a complete rehabilitation. Sony's public relations does have relapses from time to time, but they have balanced out their rhetoric, and they don't get trapped in feedback loops like they used to where they just kept compounding their errors. I think they are a little worse then the others, but it isn't like their competitors don't have faults, or persistent stigmas of their own. Microsoft will never get a free pass on hardware reliability moving forward, and as for Nintendo well they aren't likely to shake their kiddy image anytime soon.

There isn't a equivalency in all of this. Someone has to be the worst as far as certain things are concerned. In this case it is Sony like it or not. They still talk more shit then they need to, and it isn't all that hard. When you have Nintendo that comes across like a infomercial, and Microsoft which always responds with canned noncommittal replies. Sony is the player that is sometimes far too willing to talk, and that gets them into trouble more then the others.

Anyway so much to talk about in this thread, but I felt this point was probably the best one to go with.

"Victory will go not to those who make the most noise, but those who make the most impact".

I completely agree with this. Hype rarely decides if a console is a success or not.

Depends on who's doing the hyping. If it's company based, then no. If it's society based, then yes. The PS1 was THE console to own, and it won easily. The PS2 was THE console to own, and it won without even trying. The game goes for the Wii.

It's always been about what the "it", or "cool" thing is.

The same thing can be said for a lot of consoles. PS3 was incredibly hyped (excluding the $599 price tag) by fans and it had a really bad start. PSP, Wii U, 3DS, DS (not sure about this one) and Vita suffered from the same thing.

Edit: I should clarify that I'm referring to short terms success.

What I'm talking about goes beyond consoles. Everything from Cabbage Patch Kids to iphones to skinny jeans. It really doesn't matter how much a company spends marketing their product. Society decides what sells and what doesn't, based almost entirely on what's "cool". Most people in this world are sheep, and like to fit in. Not many are like us, who base their opinions on things like what they personally enjoy, and what they consider "quality".

Whichever console manages to get the "it" status bestowed upon it this gen will win. The Wii-U certainly isn't that console, so it's between the other two.

I'm really starting to wonder if I can do another gen in this community. For the TINY bit of factual information that we have, so many posts in this thread (and even the original story) are so disappointing ...

Also another thing to keep an eye on is this.

Importantly, we’ve learned that Sony has told developers that it is pushing for the final PS4 RAM to match up to Microsoft’s 8GB.

I think Sony is using this as an excuse so they look on par with Microsoft early on before launch. I just don't see them switching from 4GB to 8GB this late. Also with their statment of the more powerfull system not winning the war I think people will be very unhappy with the specs of the PS4.

hopefully it doesnt happen

if anything Sony could just roll with 6gb

Microsofts studios have grown due to buyouts? really?

Hmmmmmmmmm, i wonder how sony now happen to have many studios, oh yeah, thats right, they bought them.

Thats what i mean when i say theres double standards over at the sony clubhouse.

Sure, sony are in a strong position now, but sonys studio numbers back in 1994 were an absolute JOKE.

They bought their way in to this business just like the accused.

yes we just had a thread about it like 2 days ago

M$ had a lot of buy outs recently but i'm sure you didn't know that

yeah and Sony bought sstudios but they didn't just buy a bunch of random studios in a short amount of time. The studio usually releases games for Sony before they decide to buy them

The new MS studios haven't really made any games for M$ yet

and what double standards are you talking about?

yea you can say that they were a joke back in 94 BECAUSE THEY WERE BRAND NEW TO THE CONSOLE GAME, genius

they definitely brought there cards to the table during that 94-2000 period(yes, i'm watching closely as you are trying to wiggle off path)

they bought their way into the business like the accused? are you still talking about ips or is this just you attempting to wiggle off path? oh well ;)

if you are talking about ips then if Sony bought their way in like the accused(you have to be talking about MS) then where are the MS ips to show for it?

I guess we will get to see what them studios have been working on nextgen. After all its only with the PS3 IMO that Sony really started upping its game with First Party games. As before that Other then GT They didnt really have much i liked, Imo it was the 3rd party games such as MGS FF7 Tekken, Ridge Racer etc that made the Ps1 and PS2 worth owning. As imo both Sega and Nintendo was out doing Sony when it came to first party games big time back then in tearms of quality.

Like i said its only with PS3 Sony has really upped their game when it comes to 3rd party games, so i guess we will have to wait and see if MS will do the same thing..

well it depends

I liked the 3rd party titles also.

but Sony still brought new quality ips to the table that people enjoyed in the ps2 era at the end of the day

Microsoft is irrelevant. Halo is great and all. Gears is okay. That's about all Microsoft has going for them. So much potential and the money to challenge Sony with more games, better online that isn't a rip off and etc yet they don't care.

Just letting you know i reported you for this false comment of yours. Hope the mods do the right thing and give you a ban as we dont need your type of false info and hate here on the chartz.

Whats wrong with that statement?
PSN+ is superior to XboxLive - Everyone knows that hopefully by now.
Except for Halo and Gears(and maybe Forza) there isn't much coming from Microsoft in the last years and those are only interesting for the US Community and games like Alan Wake can be considered as a PC Game cause this is where they sold more than 3 units.
Sony is doing a lot more for its library and their community. You can't deny that fact. You get a lot of variety and expensive NEW IPs all the time.
I don't see Microsoft bringing something like The Last of Us or Beyond Two Souls that late in the Gen.At the same time Sony is letting nearly every 1st and 2nd party studio working on new IPs and of course sequels to their known franchises.
And we can be sure Guerilla Games,Quantic Dream,Santa Monica Studios,Naughty Dog,PD and many others aren't working on "Kinect/Move" Titles. They are going for (real) AAAA projects on the quality level of Uncharted,God of War and stuff.
Sony is definitely the company that is doing the most for variety and finding new things.

If Microsoft would invest they could rival that with ease but they know they don't need to as long as "their" people are happy with Halo and Gears(and CoD Mappacks).Prove me wrong =)

but Sony still brought new quality ips to the table that people enjoyed in the ps2 era at the end of the day

But so did Ms for the 360 in its early life, i could go on and list a bunch of ms ips that came this gen thats new (Doesnt mean i or you would have to of liked all them ips but to over look them would be a bit one sided imo as im sure many people did enjoy them) but i wont. What i enjoyed most on the 360 once again like with the PS1 and 2 days is the 3rd party games Not saying the isnt MS owned ips i didnt enjoy just as im not saying the wasnt Sony owned ips i didnt enjoy last gen, im just saying that like with the PS1 and 2 days most of my fav games come from 3rd partys.

So for me this is really the only gen Sony has upped their game when it comes to first party games as its the only gen Sony has had more first party titles i enjoy on their console then 3rd party games, but thats just my opinion on it as im sure the is many fans who enjoyed alot of the Sony first party games the last 2 gens just as im sure the is many who enjoyed the Lesser known Ms ips this gen and last gen.

All im saying is lets wait and see what them studios MS got from this gen that hasnt really done much this gen but may have lots of stuff and new ips in the works for next gen before we decide MS wont have new ips or that.

For all we know Ms could do like what Sony has done for its 3rd gen and bring lots of great new ips to the table.

yea probably

and i was just saying that in reply to what the other guy was saying. I'm not saying that MS didn't bring any quality ips(though i can't remember too many)

he was the 1 that basically tried to say that Sony didn't have any quality 1st party ips besides GT between 1994-2000. He also brought MS into it so that is why i said that about MS

also, weren't you a mod a little while back? I could've sworn you became a mod around the time Mr Khan did

While this is just spin it's true. Sony no doubt spent a ton more than Nintendo hyping the PS3 but Wii still left it in the dust. To me an early reveal signifys weakness not strength. As if they are afraid of being overshadow by MS new system at E3.

No. Revealing first puts Sony 1 step ahead of Microsoft. If they are launching first then even more so.

Revealing first means Sony have their plans in place while Microsoft is still trying to piece theirs together.

Not necessarily. They might have a plan, but it doesn't mean it's a good one. I still remember when Sega announced the Saturn at $399 and instead of going with their planned September release they pulled a sudden it's available now. Unfortunately alienating certain stores and having no 3rd party games as devs expected the later release date.

Sony then came up after and just said $299... And it was over for the Saturn.

Announcing first is not always best.

So you're saying Sony will say PS4 is avaialble t purchase on February 20?
You just keep downplayingl Your bias is showing.

Announcing first is a huge advantage no matter how you look at it. These consoles will release months(if not weeks) apart so the more hype they get, the better.

Actually first isn't the best. The last console being announced will be fresh in peoples minds. However all that is moot because there are other factors other than a formal announcemnt that come in to play. You have E3 and marketing where both consoles will get a push at.

Not to mention with Sony announcing in February and Microsoft in March Microsoft may have more to show off at their event since they are going a month later.

I guess we'll agree to disagree.

In my opinion, Sony announcing first sets the standard and will affect how and when Microsoft reveals. It gives them the upper hand.
