"Victory will go not to those who make the most noise, but those who make the most impact".

I completely agree with this. Hype rarely decides if a console is a success or not.

Depends on who's doing the hyping. If it's company based, then no. If it's society based, then yes. The PS1 was THE console to own, and it won easily. The PS2 was THE console to own, and it won without even trying. The game goes for the Wii.

It's always been about what the "it", or "cool" thing is.

The same thing can be said for a lot of consoles. PS3 was incredibly hyped (excluding the $599 price tag) by fans and it had a really bad start. PSP, Wii U, 3DS, DS (not sure about this one) and Vita suffered from the same thing.

Edit: I should clarify that I'm referring to short terms success.

What I'm talking about goes beyond consoles. Everything from Cabbage Patch Kids to iphones to skinny jeans. It really doesn't matter how much a company spends marketing their product. Society decides what sells and what doesn't, based almost entirely on what's "cool". Most people in this world are sheep, and like to fit in. Not many are like us, who base their opinions on things like what they personally enjoy, and what they consider "quality".

Whichever console manages to get the "it" status bestowed upon it this gen will win. The Wii-U certainly isn't that console, so it's between the other two.
