Yeah, it's like half a million dollars for a 30 second advertisement. To MS, that isn't much though. Terrible idea. |

it would be a great way to advertise an already announced console but yet to be released, but a bad way to actually announce the console. A console reveal needs to be informative, and you can't really inform in the limited amount of time you get in a superbowl ad...
I think Nintendo should reveal it's new console to the US using the SuperBowl. It will get people excited that the WiiU is coming out.

Wow. Forbes says 3.8m. O.o
| Chark said: I think Microsoft might. If that countdown to E3 they have is their full unveiling than they could create a whole hype countdown marketing campaign starting with some advanced graphical footage of maybe a shooter launch game with a narration of a battle speech talking about what's upcoming for the soldiers. Then a suspenseful cut to a graphic "What's coming N3XT?" Slowly separate the N3XT into "N 3X T" then have the screen flash a few times with "N 3Xbox T" then blank screen, then the countdown, then a website underneath. Finish with the Microsoft logo. |
Someon knows a little bit about advertising ;P

I mean a teaser kind of commercial. Something "Prepare for what's next" and then some images of PS 1-3 and finally have some "Playstation Forever" text turn into PS4 and a date for the full reveal. Would probably get a huge number of people in for the reveal.

I doubt it would get a huge number of people for a reveal. Most of the people watching the superbowl would be casual gamers at best. Leveraging the superbowl would most likely just cost a lot of money, destroy currect console sells, for very little reward...

either they get it or they don't. If they don't then the console sales will stay the same. If they do the new console will get a lot of hype. I don't get how it can be the worst of both worlds if they do.

It's really not a terrible idea to spend half a million or even a million dollars in exchange for showing your new product on literally the most watched moment in the world, including football fans, sports fan, people who just like to be at parties (superbowl party), even people who seriouslly just watch it FOR the commercials. Last year, 111.3 MILLION vieweres....not even 50 million people watch E3.

do you get really hyped from a 30 second commercial? Plus, unless they plan on releasing the consoles in the spring, any hype would be lost by the time the consoles are released in the fall.
That is my point. There is almost no reward for doing a superbowl commercial. 99% of the people watching probably wouldn't even consider buying a console during the first year of release.
On the flip side, it would raise public awareness that new consoles are coming and sales of current gen systems would plummet.
