it would be a great way to advertise an already announced console but yet to be released, but a bad way to actually announce the console. A console reveal needs to be informative, and you can't really inform in the limited amount of time you get in a superbowl ad...

I mean a teaser kind of commercial.  Something "Prepare for what's next" and then some images of PS 1-3 and finally have some "Playstation Forever" text turn into PS4 and a date for the full reveal.  Would probably get a huge number of people in for the reveal.

I doubt it would get a huge number of people for a reveal.  Most of the people watching the superbowl would be casual gamers at best.  Leveraging the superbowl would most likely just cost a lot of money, destroy currect console sells, for very little reward...

either they get it or they don't.  If they don't then the console sales will stay the same.  If they do the new console will get a lot of hype.  I don't get how it can be the worst of both worlds if they do.

do you get really hyped from a 30 second commercial?  Plus, unless they plan on releasing the consoles in the spring, any hype would be lost by the time the consoles are released in the fall.

That is my point.  There is almost no reward for doing a superbowl commercial.  99% of the people watching probably wouldn't even consider buying a console during the first year of release.

On the flip side, it would raise public awareness that new consoles are coming and sales of current gen systems would plummet.

I guess so but if the full reveal was in March or something it would be a good hype builder and get lots of people to tune in.

Great idea, just that I don't think either are ready to let the mainstream know about new consoles. It's still too early for mass marketing.

I think it would be better if they announce the actual console first.

Man, doesn't superbowl ads cost a fuck ton of money???

Yeah, it's like half a million dollars for a 30 second advertisement. To MS, that isn't much though.

Terrible idea.

Lol, not even close.

It is about 4 million dollars for a 30 second ad.

Smart, but think of how much they have to show off in a 30 second ad, and how costly it would be.
