Forums - Sony - How much would it cost to throw a cell in PS4?

The feature of BC is a BIG one for me this gen.  It seems pretty certain the architecture will change from cell but how much does the actual processor cost these days for Sony?  If it's $50 then I say they should go for it and integrate it with the cooling system and other innards of the PS4.  I'm in college and only have room for one box.  Without BC I'll have to choose or switch them every time i need to switch consoles.

If sub $50 there should be no question to put it into the PS4.

If over $50 I could see why Sony would drop it possibly.

I don't understand how BC has become such a big issue. Sony would not even think about the possibility and should only make PS4 backward compatible with PS2 games imo. They have spent heavily recently to push PS3 sales. Increase manufacturing costs for the PS4 and kill PS3 sales - doesn't sound like a good idea.

It may be a deciding factor in whether or not I buy a PS4 though and many others probably.  Money will be tight so that extra $200 I could get for my PS3 would be huge and like I said only room for one box under the TV.

4 ≈ One

About tree-fitty.

I would imagine $50 is a pretty good estimate. However, that would also tack on an extra $50-60 to the final price of the PS4. I think they should just aim for PS1 and PS2 BC. This wouldn't cost them much and would not cut into the PS3's sales as much as a $400 fully BC PS4 would. I do think most, if not all, games on PSN will get a small update to work on the PS4, as well.

Even $50 would be way too much, even if they only sold 10m units that is looking at a extra cost of $500m. Is built in backwards compatibility really worth Sony spending half a billion dollars in manufacturing? Adding an extra $50 to the manufacturing cost would mean adding an extra $75 to the unit price unless they want to take a loss.

Streaming legacy PS3 games via Gaiki for PS+ members and/or an optional add-on like thy patented a couple years ago are both much better options.
