A lot of the ice is on land, though. The Greenland and Antarctic Ice Caps

Also, the water expands as it gets warmer too as the ice sheets melt

lulz, Khan brings up a valid point and then some guy quotes him only to respond with an invalid one. Classic. The displacement is what the experiment shows, dude. The volume of that ice is equal to the volume of its water when melted. Thus, you will never overflow. Conservation of energy.

Water + Ice = Displacement

Displacement = volume of ice

volume of ice = volume of melted ice

Get it?

That's not exactly correct.  Almost any substance, going from one state to another, changes in volume.  Most liquids that freeze shrink, but water actually works backwards, it expands as the molecules align into their solid pattern.  Conservation of energy is another concept altogether - energy is released or absorbed as states change. (ice -> +energy -> water -> +energy -> steam ...this is why steam burns happen, the steam releases energy onto you as it changes to water, and why you feel so cold getting out of a pool, the water is taking energy from you as it evaporates)

However, Mr Khan is still correct.  The problem (for the sea level) isn't that ice in the ocean will melt, the problem is that ice on land (and there's a lot of it on Antarctica) will melt, adding water to the ocean that isn't currently there.

why would anyone believe in a book someone wrote? even my medical textbooks are full of error, and these are heavily researched evidence based book... We don't even know who 'really' wrote the bible. Probably some guy trying to make some quick cash on sheepish believers of their time.

Because there's that odd chance that _those_ who wrote the book were divinely inspired.

Recently came back from San Francisco, on the street there was a guy in the street preaching about Christianity; ppl looked at him weird and treated him like a mad man next the the subway station. Ppl did the same back in the days and were mostly treated with respect... so who was divinely inspired again?! times have chance, sketicisim, individualism, and critical thinking is probably the worst enemy to religion. Who would believe me if I told them I split the Red Sea in half and i can communicate with God? i will probably get treated like a mad man. Stories in the bible sound like fairy tales anyway u look at it. Virgin Mary?! LOL..who's to say the hymen was intacted, she got creampied by someone

Water doesn't raise because the way the water molecules are a arranged. The density is lower than water causing the ice to float, once it melts the density goes up and the volume decreases (the volume the ice took up). The average water level will still go up. Though there is quite a bit of water in the caps that are above ground in antarctica; which is the largest continent on the planet by estimations and the ice gets over 1 mile thick. This isn't enough to flood the planet but most of the coast lines and islands will be gone. (By the estimates.)

As for the the topic there are other scriptures that say god will not allow man totally ruin the Earth, and there are other more pressing dangers to the planet then just global warming. For example the US has several hundred thousand serine gas bombs which is enought to kill all life, even the cockroaches several times over decaying in bunkers in the mid-west and they are unable to safely disarm them they are so coroded. These are from WWII and what they have been doing is just pouring cement over the bunkers in the hopes if there is a breach it can be contained. This news is from 1994 an investegation for ABC and expert they had on estimated they would go off if nothing was done around 2015.

As BasilZero pointed out no one will now the time. There are signs it is getting near but as other scriptures bring out it would come suddenly as a theif, and the world as a whole will be declaring "Peace and Security" (Whether this is an actual pronouncement or just a genral view is unknown) that is when god will come and destroy the world. (Matthew)

It worth bring out that world in this sense is the human system of things, or human run system. The Bible is composed of literal and figurtive passages and you have to do a lot studying to tell them apart. In all of the cases of the world being destroy they use the figurtive sense. Because it points out that the world's end will be simular to the way the world ended in Noah's day. The earth wasn't destroy the people ruining the Earth where destroyed. In several scripture it brings out the god didn't create the world (in this case Earth) for nothing but to be inhabited for time indifinate. (Psalms, 2 Peter amoung others)

Sorry for not pointing out the exact scriptures. I'm working on something else, and need to get it done before work.

First of all I'd like to say that you have no sense of honor. I'm not even catholic but that last sentence is highly insulting in general, I don't need to be religious to realize how out of left field you actually are.

When people call a man a madman, that doesn't make him a madman... I'm not sure where you get your logic from but times have indeed changed if that's the logic used in today's world. I'd rather have my face burn than listen to much more of it to be totally honest.

um... how were the mayans wrong ? didn't thye just write the calender to a certain point and we took it as an end of the world sign... what culture is sonsidered the ignorant one?

I am expressing free speech and I think if you believe Bible bedtime stories you are probably idiots but I still "respect" your believes and I won't go blow up your church with a bomb strapped to your bible. In my sane mind, I think the Bible if full of shit, because the stories are not believable and none of you have seen God's face; probably because He doesn't really exist. Show me some hard evidence, maybe I will believe it. Bible didn't mention the dinosaurs, we have fossil records, the dating preceeded the time of Adam and Eve by most Bibilcal records. I went to a Chrisitian elementary school, i thought the stories would bullshit when I was 7 years old, and I still do and I am 29. Sense of honor on a internet forum? Nah, you wanted my opinion and I am here to express it. Reglions only lead to violence; look in any history book.

If I said "Your mother is a whore", would that be ok as free speech? You can't say whatever you want and not expect repercussions if what you say is insulting or lacks civility.

Honor transcend the medium you communicate on.

And the bible mentions the dinosaurs, but you don't care about that, you just want to say it's bullshit.

15 Behold now behemoth, which I made with thee; he eateth grass as an ox.

16 Lo now, his strength is in his loins, and his force is in the navel of his belly.

17 He moveth his tail like a cedar: the sinews of his stones are wrapped together.

18 His bones are as strong pieces of brass; his bones are like bars of iron.

19 He is the chief of the ways of God: he that made him can make his sword to approach unto him.

20 Surely the mountains bring him forth food, where all the beasts of the field play.

21 He lieth under the shady trees, in the covert of the reed, and fens.

22 The shady trees cover him with their shadow; the willows of the brook compass him about.

23 Behold, he drinketh up a river, and hasteth not: he trusteth that he can draw up Jordan into his mouth.

24 He taketh it with his eyes: his nose pierceth through snares.
