Forums - Gaming - NINTENDO WIIU IS DOOMED HUH?

badgenome said:
I'll try spelling it out one more time: because the holiday season is over and people are dooming the Wii U, sales are somewhere between middling and disappointing, they just delayed a bunch of titles, people are carping about no gaemz, etc., etc. Obviously, no one here can give you a definitive answer because no one here knows. But there are a lot of factors at play that don't point to Nintendo having an embarrassment of riches. To put it another way, knowing that virtually every franchise that Nintendo has actually given a shit about over the past decade is already in the works for the Wii U, what else would you expect? The only thing that's obviously missing is whatever Retro is working on. I'm not sure why that wouldn't be enough of a surprise.

If you really don't think that the mainstream gaming media picked up on yesterday's Nintendo Direct announcements, you are spectacularly wrong. It doesn't matter where an announcement is made. If it's big, it's going to get coverage however it's made. In fact, it's much better for Nintendo to announce stuff when nothing much is happening than to try and fight for some share of the spotlight at E3, where everyone is assuming that the PS4 and new Xbox are going to be unveiled.

Announcing that there are more games coming down the line doesn't significantly boost system sales now, so "Wii U sales are currently middling or disappointing" isn't really an explanation, either. And Nintendo won't give a crap about people carping about "no gaemz". More importantly, if their intent was to bolster interest in the system, they could easily have focused more on third-party offerings coming in the next few months, rather than teasing some games that may not even be released this year (I'm referring to SMTxFE and the new Monolith Soft game). Why focus on first-party now, if that was their intent?

And you don't think any franchise that Nintendo has given a shit about is missing? Really? Let's go through a selection...

Metroid
Wii Sports/Play
Animal Crossing
Pokemon
Donkey Kong
Kirby
The Excite franchise
Mario Sports
Battalion Wars
Kid Icarus
Wario adventure (as opposed to WarioWare)
Endless Ocean (this is one I really hope shows up at E3)
Pilotwings
The Rhythm series (Rhythm Heaven, etc)
Paper Mario

And that's before any new franchises, crossovers (Mario vs Sonic, anyone?), etc. It's also before you factor in any franchise revivals - neither Wave Race nor 1080 showed up on the Wii. Neither did F-Zero, Star Fox, or the Brain Training series. Do you really think Nintendo has discarded them entirely?

And I'm sure that parts of the mainstream media did cover it. But they'll have covered it in an off-hand manner, a short blurb and that's it. E3 is where the mainstream media give significant coverage to things. Meanwhile, if the intent was to avoid having their products drowned out at E3, they could easily have announced Mario and Mario Kart a few weeks before E3, and made it a big deal, so that people are anticipating the chance to play them at E3. Instead, by announcing it in January, people will just go "Oh, that's pretty much what I expected", and move on.

Basically they've ruined their E3 show ^^

Some good announcements, though most of them were expected to come out soon anyway.

Also mark my words. If the new Mario Kart doesn't come with any hardware peripheral (even if it's just plastic) it will do MUCH worse than MK Wii (even if the WiiU gets a 100m userbase). The plastic wheel was the big reason why it was pirated much less in certain regions.

So it will only sell 15 million?

could'nt the samething be said for new mario bros u, but its not exactly lighting the world on fire like the wii version.

They both will do great.  Wait until you see the sales NSMBU has by the systems end.

No joke. If they want to boost sales, they will add NSMBU with a Wii u to make a new bundle.

Ask stefl1504 for a sig, even if you don't need one.

Agreed.  NSMBU Is the game that is generating the most interest for the system.

Look, after Nintendo's E3, people always go, "Oh, that's pretty much what I expected." Every time I've bothered to watch it liveblogged or whatever, the reaction when it's over has been, "DROP THE BOMB DROP THE BOMB HERE IT COMES... that's it?" Every single time.

But yesterday? People freaked out, IGN was all "WII U COMEBACK YEAAAAAAAH!", and so forth. It was a pretty big deal. At E3 it would have been, "Oh, look another Mario Kart... HOLY SHIT XBOX 8 HALO 5 AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"

The problem is you are expecting

When you are more likely to get

(Battalion Wars and Excitebike...? LOL. Reaching much?)

I still think Nintendo will have enough surprises left at e3 to still wow most, if not all people.

If you are not a Nintendo fan then i think the Nintendo Direct will be a Meh, it certainly is for me. Not sure why all the excitement to be honest, especially for yet another mario kart and a HD game. If this was Sony/Ms they would be getting a lot of flak to be honest.

Nintendo need to be working a lot harder on other users who are not Nintendo fans, and I dont think they are getting that yet. But they had better hurry up, because I am sure Sony/MS are sitting there thinking "wow, what an opportunity".

Okay, but they showed X, Wonderful 101 and Bayo, and revealed FE X Shin megami Tensei, so did those just not show up in your video?

They don't like them becuase they are exclusive.  You can bet if those were shown at sony or microsoft they would say those games are amazing.  My favorite thing this past year was when Bayonette 2 went ot Nintendo.  I just LOVED reading all the hateful comments from fans of that game being super pissed that Nintendo was making the game.

Somehow a game they loved became a game they hated and they hated Nintendo for it.  If it weren't for nintendo there woudl be no bayonette 2 at all.  I twould not exist, yet they hate Nintnedo for getting the game.  Funny.

Unfortunately some people can't handle a differing opinion. You can make up your own little story in your own mind to convince you that its just "Fanboys" and everyone else is really happy with the Nintendo Direct videos. But i guess at the end of the day, we shall see when the games are released and if console sales go up. That will be the proof in the pudding.

As for me, Bayonetta, really don't care for it, I think I purchased it on budget at some point, never played it, not really my style of game, but i like to collect games so if i was to ever need to look at a particular genre then I have it to hand. I am a big of a game collector.

Fire Emblem, I am not into those types of Japanese styled games, in fact the only Japanese game I have ever really enjoyed was Yakuza. As for Zelda, never played one until the Wii, found it to be a bit rubbish, and wouldnt buy a wii-u for a HD game.

For me only X looks interesting, but this reminds me of too many japanese FF type games, and I am not a fan generally, so would reserve judgement until its released, so wouldnt go out and get a wii-u for it.

I would also question the release time frame of some of these games, rumour has it some of these wont be seen until 2014 and some in 2015...  for me this is too far in the future to worry about it.

So there you have my opinion, you can take it or leave it, but for me, the direct did nothing for me, if it did for you, thats great.
