Forums - Nintendo - Wii U achievements?

well games have had in game stuff haven't they but if we are talking about the console based network it wouldn't stop me gaming, what i do like about these gamercards is the picture of the game you are playing at the time,i like them sometimes the artwork can be so good and it's nice to see what people are playing at any given time but i understand it is not every ones cup of tea although it would be nice to see some WiiU cards with pretty pictures

Nintendo was silly to not follow MS and Sony on achievements/trophies.

Those who don't like it can simply ignore it. But it adds something extra for those who enjoy it - more hardcore achievement/trophy hunters will go really far getting their goals - such as buying more games for the same platform, or buying more DLC, being more online.

"Optional" as Nintendo said is NOT nearly enough. What's the fun in that? What if my favorite game does not get achievements? Every game has to have achievements for it to work, and it has to be a console/account wide system.

they said no. and to that i said big mistake

Nintendo never outright said no. They said that developers will be able to on a game-by-game basis, and that they can if they want to. There just won't be an overall unified approach. Whether developers actually implement them is left up to them.

we are talking about a unified achievment system connected by network id...they said no to that. Achievments in games only are a joke dont get me started lol

I am glad that Nintendo hasn't implemented system-wide achievements in any of their consoles, because I don't want others to see what I have or haven't achieved. Mind you, this has nothing to do with the fact that I am not any good at games.

oh cmon....u never even got rewarded for any of ur radiant dawn achievments....it would have been cooler to have an awesome trophy for that then having to make a youtube video and u know it.

A trophy means that many other gamers were going for the same achievement which means that it isn't really anything special anymore (unless it's an insane feat like beating Mega Man 9 without getting hit once). If you ever want to show off, then thinking of an achievement on your own will get you much more praise than doing a task than thousands of others completed.

There probably would be something similar.  There was were Achievements in XBLA games like Braid where you had to beat the game in under a certain amount of time or Limbo where you had to beat the game without dying three times (or something like that).  I took one look at those and said "Fuck that!".  But I've seen a few people that earned them.  They are godly in my book.  You could make up an achievement on your own like beating NSMBU without powerups and you could accomplish it.....but nobody will ever know.  Wouldn't it be nice to see a little pic or get a little trophy for such an amazing feat?  Wouldn't it be cool to show that off to your friends?

You are absolutely right, if we ignore that it's possible to record videos or take pictures and put them on a website.

It is possible.  But with Achievements, it's all right there in you profile.  You know this but I'll just humor you.  Remember how you and I double teamed Resident Evil Revelations and totally raped Raid Mode?  Anybody from our friends lists could just look at our profiles, look at the games we played, and see how badass we were (you more than me but we won't get into that).  You could look at your friends and compare and say "I'm better than them at Mario Kart, Street Fighter, and Super Mario but they're better than me at Starfox."  No extra effort.  You beat the goal and it's there in your profile forever.  Nobody will ever know how great you were at RE: R.  If rumors are true, there will be Xbox/Playstation gamers that will get the game, do exactly what you and I did, and have that little notch added to their virtual bedpost.  We did it but people will just have to take our words for it.

Every new console has the option, now, but Nintendo consoles don't.

the friends connectivity in game is pretty cool too,i don't know how it works in nintendo but i was playing farcry 3 and walked up to this kind of large red rock where you have start in game games so to speak, they are dotted around the island and it had ajesents name written on it or akmitsu whoever had the high score,i think it's pretty cool while you are in the game world

And on the flipside, if you are one of the persons who doesn't care too much about showing off, it's a meaningless feature. The vast majority of gamers fall into that camp. Some, because they are genuinely not interested at all. Some, because they aren't all that good at games and know that they'll never come close to achieve all the things good gamers do. Some, because they play games to have fun and don't believe that you can achieve anything substantial in a video game; they rather invest their energy into achieving things in real life instead. There are a lot of reasons to not care about achievements.

On gaming forums, however, achievements are of incredible importance. That's because the people who are attracted to such forums are often people who like to show off; and most of them are obviously male, because females in general don't have the same drive for competition. So you end up with a general consensus that suggests that a system-wide achievement system is a necessity. You are looking at a sample that is not representative of the actual market.

So Nintendo consoles don't have a system-wide achievement system. An insignificant minority will complain. It happens.

On a personal level, it doesn't bother me that Nintendo consoles don't have a system-wide achievement system; for that to happen I would have to care in the first place. On a business level, it doesn't hurt Nintendo to ignore a tiny minority of the market, so from that point of view I don't have any objections to Nintendo's decision either.

Yeah, but then, you could just ignore them if you don't care about them.  I just know that nobody really cared about Uncharted until Sony gave it a trophy patch (first retail game to get the patch, btw).  Then, the game exploded.  People like 'em.

That's a nice story, but I don't believe in fairy tales.

Hey, it's money left on the table.  They're addictive.  Make one of those sales graph thingies that show Uncharted 1's sales.  I'm sure it will prove my point.  There are people that buy games for one console or the other just because they prefer one over the other.  With Nintendo, there's nothing there to prefer.

Achievements are what made me buy most of my games for 360 instead of PS3.
