Forums - Sony - [EurogamerDF] Orbis Unmasked: what to expect from the next-gen PlayStation

This does sound powerful enough for a next gen console and the parts make sense so this very well could be true

Though one of the most interesting rumors is the next xbox OS requiring 3 GB of RAM. Thats massive for a console

Sounds powerful, but pretty affordable. That 4gig DDR5 ram is what will really set it apart from the Next Xbox.

"We also have hard data on Orbis's memory set-up. It features 4GB of GDDR5 - the ultra-fast RAM that typically ships with the latest PC graphics cards - with 512MB reserved for the operating system. This is in stark contrast to the much slower DDR3 that Durango will almost certainly ship with. Microsoft looks set to be using an offshoot of eDRAM technology connected to the graphics core to offset the bandwidth issues the use of DDR3 incurs. Volume of RAM is the key element in Durango's favour - there'll be 8GB in total, with a significant amount (two sources we've spoken to suggest 3GB in total) reserved for the OS"

lol his statement makes no sense to begin with. GDDR5 is a derivative of DDR3 and is meang for GPU use and has terrible timings.

For computing tasks and simple read and write access, DDR3 > GDDR5 any day.

the secret sauce (lol) bit is new. Previously that term was used only for Durango

New and not new lol.

The previous rumors stated the PS4 will have A10 CPU + APU + GPU... the A10 CPU is the same based in Jaguar cores and the APU is not more a APU specifics for game but that secre sauce "Paired up with the eight AMD cores, we find a bespoke GPU-like "Compute" module, designed to ease the burden on certain operations - physics calculations are a good example of traditional CPU work that are often hived off to GPU cores.".

So the APU in A10 chips is not to be used in graphics but in others tasks together with the CPU... a can see AMD/Sony can custom this APU to just work with that removing the graphcis features.

That's just more detail about what we already knows.

Wow, I wasn't aware the 7900M was comparable to the 78xx on desktop. So if this rumor is true thats pretty amazing!

I finished the read now.

In line with the other rumors with a little more details... now we can start to say the PS4 a powerful enough machine for the next-gen... at least 10x the raw power than PS360.

I'm happy with this news because it's what I expect from PS4/720... with console optimizations and dedicated hardware the 1080p@60fps is really real.

How would 1 even use 3gb of Ram for the OS? Windows and then what?

http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/profile/92109/nintendopie/ Nintendopie  Was obviously right and I was obviously wrong. I will forever be a lesser being than them. (6/16/13)

well what are the benefits to having GDDR5? there has to be some kind of benefit there for them to use it

and everybody else seems to like the news of it having GDDR5 so wtf! lol

Kinect. The same reason the rumors said two cores of the CPU will be used for OS too.

Anyway there is rumors about the latest devkits with optmitation to reserve only 1.5GB and 1 core of the CPU for the OS/Kinect.

seems like they also want the 720 to have an Internet Browser that almost rivals a laptops OS maybe?

I guess this will be 1 thing the PS wont have over the 720 this time around.. The Internet Browser

i guess..

These PS3 specs seems like everything a PC gamer can put in a sub 200W machine... strong.
