Forums - Sony - [EurogamerDF] Orbis Unmasked: what to expect from the next-gen PlayStation

Nsanity said:

The part about the Orbis having the same CPU as Durango seems new.

No... old rumors too... both AMD Jaguar core.

There is nothing new in the Eurogamer article... everything in line with the latest rumors.

so im to tired to read the article, but if they are right, how powerful are these things going to be?

I don't know if I'm reading the article wrong, because other people seem way more excited at this than I think they should be...  but,  basically as powerful as a middle of the road gaming PC in terms of specs, potentially a bit better with optimization.  Basically, look at some of the higher end PC games running at higher end settings and that's what to expect.

PS360 top games looks miles better than PC games in 2006. So these specs will probably allow, after years of optimizations, they will probably destroy any game we are seeing today.

I think neither the PS4 and 720 will have laptop components. I expect both consoles to be a powerhouse, I don't care and don't need a green console, my 650watt pc amuses me.

7900 GT: Pretty much the GPU of PS3 and high end GPU of its time

Geforce 680GTX: Modern high end GPU

There is your answer why we don't get high end GPUs anymore in consoles.  We already had heat problems with this gen consoles...

Giving the 7900GT to RSX is being waay too kind...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSX_'Reality_Synthesizer'

"Based on NV47 Chip previously based on the 7800 but with cut down features like lower memory bandwidth and only as many ROPs as the lower end 7600."

But yeah, your point remains clear. Like Turkish said, something like 7850 or 650Ti even would be highly possible.

wait so is the 7850 more powerful than the 7970(the chip that is said to be used in this rumor)?

About the same. 7970m being a laptop GPU draws only 75Watts and is actually pretty good choice for a next gen GPU but isn't anywhere near the desktop 7970. Performance wise it's around the 7850/7870 on the desktop side.

Sounds powerful, but pretty affordable. That 4gig DDR5 ram is what will really set it apart from the Next Xbox.

HD 7970M is a GPU with 2.2 TFLOPS raw power... so the 10% lower for the PS4 version put it in line with the VG247 rumors... good enough for the next gen.

"We also have hard data on Orbis's memory set-up. It features 4GB of GDDR5 - the ultra-fast RAM that typically ships with the latest PC graphics cards - with 512MB reserved for the operating system. This is in stark contrast to the much slower DDR3 that Durango will almost certainly ship with. Microsoft looks set to be using an offshoot of eDRAM technology connected to the graphics core to offset the bandwidth issues the use of DDR3 incurs. Volume of RAM is the key element in Durango's favour - there'll be 8GB in total, with a significant amount (two sources we've spoken to suggest 3GB in total) reserved for the OS"

Sure, I'm not saying it's not good enough. Just saying it isn't 7970 desktop, but more like 7850 on the desktop side.

Besides single compute precision TFLOPS stats are kind of meaningless for GPUs. Memory nadwidth, fill rate, memory interface, stream processors...this is where it's at.

It is much more powerful than I would imagine these consoles to be, so I won't let myself be hyped for that just yet

ok i'll just join with you and wait
